7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, For over a century, the United Way of the Concho |

8 | 9 | | Valley has provided outstanding service to area citizens; and |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The organization traces its origins to 1911, when |

10 | 11 | | the San Angelo Circle of the International Order of King's |
---|
11 | 12 | | Daughters and Sons was established to assist area families in need; |
---|
12 | 13 | | in 1925, the group joined with other local organizations to better |
---|
13 | 14 | | serve the community, leading to the formation of a community chest; |
---|
14 | 15 | | during World War II, what was then known as United Charities became |
---|
15 | 16 | | the United War Chest; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Following the war, the Tom Green County Community |
---|
17 | 18 | | Council was created to address unmet social needs; the organization |
---|
18 | 19 | | eventually rebranded as the United Way of Tom Green County in 1974; |
---|
19 | 20 | | wanting to make a greater impact, the group expanded its support to |
---|
20 | 21 | | more communities in 1991 and took the name the United Way of the |
---|
21 | 22 | | Concho Valley; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Today, UWCV works to address such vital issues as |
---|
23 | 24 | | education, financial stability, and health across the Concho |
---|
24 | 25 | | Valley's 14 counties; its primary goals include helping children |
---|
25 | 26 | | meet essential academic benchmarks, eliminating child abuse and |
---|
26 | 27 | | domestic violence, providing access to mental health and substance |
---|
27 | 28 | | abuse services, preventing homelessness, and expanding outreach |
---|
28 | 29 | | efforts; and |
---|
29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, UWCV benefits from a number of strategic |
---|
30 | 31 | | partnerships, having most recently incorporated Dolly Parton's |
---|
31 | 32 | | Imagination Library into its United We Read program; the initiative |
---|
32 | 33 | | involves having hundreds of area youth join together on a |
---|
33 | 34 | | designated day to read a book, emphasizing the importance of early |
---|
34 | 35 | | literacy; and |
---|
35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, The United Way of the Concho Valley has |
---|
36 | 37 | | distinguished itself as a force for good in the communities it |
---|
37 | 38 | | serves, and the organization is indeed deserving of recognition for |
---|
38 | 39 | | its dedicated efforts; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby honor the United Way of the Concho Valley for its |
---|
41 | 42 | | contributions and extend to all those affiliated with the |
---|
42 | 43 | | organization sincere best wishes for continued success with their |
---|
43 | 44 | | important work; and, be it further |

44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

45 | 46 | | prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the |
