7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service has |

8 | 9 | | drawn to a close with the death of Thomas Neil Maddox Sr. of |

9 | 10 | | Pineland on February 13, 2025, at the age of 75; and |

10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Tom Maddox was born on September 11, 1949, in |
---|
11 | 12 | | Henderson, to Oscar and Mildred Maddox, and he grew up with the |
---|
12 | 13 | | companionship of two brothers, Eric and Glen, and two sisters, |
---|
13 | 14 | | Gloria and Elesa; he went on to share a fulfilling marriage with his |
---|
14 | 15 | | wife, Barbara, before her death in 2011, and they were blessed with |
---|
15 | 16 | | three children, Thomas, Carmen, and Cindy; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Maddox worked as a Texas Department of Public |
---|
17 | 18 | | Safety officer for 30 years, earning the rank of corporal before his |
---|
18 | 19 | | retirement; in 2001, he was elected sheriff of Sabine County, and he |
---|
19 | 20 | | held that office for more than 24 years until his passing; along the |
---|
20 | 21 | | way, he served two terms as president of the Sheriffs' Association |
---|
21 | 22 | | of Texas, where he advocated for border safety and law enforcement |
---|
22 | 23 | | initiatives; and |
---|
23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Engaged in his community, Sheriff Maddox was a |
---|
24 | 25 | | member of Redland Masonic Lodge No. 3 in San Augustine and the |
---|
25 | 26 | | Shriners and Scottish Rite; he participated in Pineland Day events, |
---|
26 | 27 | | and he was honored as Citizen of the Year for his dedication; |
---|
27 | 28 | | moreover, he served with the Pineland Volunteer Fire Department and |
---|
28 | 29 | | the Sabine County Go Texas Cook-Off Team, and he established the |
---|
29 | 30 | | D.A.R.E. program in Sabine County schools; and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, In his free time, Sheriff Maddox enjoyed hunting, |
---|
31 | 32 | | fishing, and coaching Little League baseball and girls' softball; |
---|
32 | 33 | | above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, and he was a |
---|
33 | 34 | | longtime congregant of Hemphill Church of Christ; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Tom Maddox touched the lives of countless people |
---|
35 | 36 | | through his more than five decades of exceptional public service, |
---|
36 | 37 | | and he has left behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by |
---|
37 | 38 | | all those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it |

38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

39 | 40 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Sheriff Thomas Neil |

40 | 41 | | Maddox Sr. and extend heartfelt condolences to the members of his |

41 | 42 | | family: to his son, Thomas Neil Maddox Jr., and his fiancée, Casey |
