67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, The H. E. Butt Foundation has made a positive
89 difference in the lives of countless Texans through its many
910 charitable endeavors; and
1011 WHEREAS, Established in 1933 by Mary Holdsworth Butt and
1112 Howard Butt Sr., the H. E. Butt Foundation has long focused on
1213 improving literacy and mental health care, funding recreation and
1314 camps, hosting ecumenical Christian retreats, and partnering with
1415 other organizations that serve families and children; and
1516 WHEREAS, Early on, Mrs. Holdsworth Butt addressed health and
1617 opportunity disparities, and from 1955 to 1981, she served on the
1718 Board for Texas State Hospitals and Special Schools in support of
1819 mental health work; the second generation of leadership under
1920 Howard Butt Jr., the founders' eldest son, continued to advocate
2021 for mental and spiritual wellness and focused on furthering the
2122 foundation's faith-centered programs; and
2223 WHEREAS, The foundation is currently led by Mr. Butt's
2324 daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Butt Rogers, who serves as a
2425 trustee, and David Rogers, who serves as president and CEO; this
2526 third generation of leadership has carried on the tradition of
2627 youth and family development while expanding the foundation's scope
2728 and reach, developing new initiatives in Leakey and San Antonio,
2829 and investing in the environmental stewardship of the Frio River
2930 Canyon; and
3031 WHEREAS, Located at the canyon is the 1,900-acre H. E. Butt
3132 Foundation Camp, which hosts more than 15,000 people each year,
3233 with a special focus on serving youth and families who normally
3334 would not be able to participate in retreat opportunities; other
3435 foundation programs include the Outdoor School, which partners with
3536 San Antonio public schools to help teachers and students experience
3637 the outdoors, and the Laity Lodge in Leakey, which serves as a quiet
3738 refuge where guests can reflect, pray, and participate in the arts;
3839 and
3940 WHEREAS, For nearly a century, the H. E. Butt Foundation has
4041 helped young people and families in Texas cultivate their physical,
4142 mental, and spiritual wholeness, and all those associated with this
4243 esteemed organization may reflect with pride on their achievements;
4344 now, therefore, be it
4445 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4546 Legislature hereby honor the H. E. Butt Foundation for its
4647 outstanding service to the people of Texas; and, be it further
4748 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4849 prepared for the foundation as an expression of high regard by the
4950 Texas House of Representatives.
