7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The H. E. Butt Foundation has made a positive |

8 | 9 | | difference in the lives of countless Texans through its many |

9 | 10 | | charitable endeavors; and |
---|
10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1933 by Mary Holdsworth Butt and |
---|
11 | 12 | | Howard Butt Sr., the H. E. Butt Foundation has long focused on |
---|
12 | 13 | | improving literacy and mental health care, funding recreation and |
---|
13 | 14 | | camps, hosting ecumenical Christian retreats, and partnering with |
---|
14 | 15 | | other organizations that serve families and children; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Early on, Mrs. Holdsworth Butt addressed health and |
---|
16 | 17 | | opportunity disparities, and from 1955 to 1981, she served on the |
---|
17 | 18 | | Board for Texas State Hospitals and Special Schools in support of |
---|
18 | 19 | | mental health work; the second generation of leadership under |
---|
19 | 20 | | Howard Butt Jr., the founders' eldest son, continued to advocate |
---|
20 | 21 | | for mental and spiritual wellness and focused on furthering the |
---|
21 | 22 | | foundation's faith-centered programs; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The foundation is currently led by Mr. Butt's |
---|
23 | 24 | | daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Butt Rogers, who serves as a |
---|
24 | 25 | | trustee, and David Rogers, who serves as president and CEO; this |
---|
25 | 26 | | third generation of leadership has carried on the tradition of |
---|
26 | 27 | | youth and family development while expanding the foundation's scope |
---|
27 | 28 | | and reach, developing new initiatives in Leakey and San Antonio, |
---|
28 | 29 | | and investing in the environmental stewardship of the Frio River |
---|
29 | 30 | | Canyon; and |

30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Located at the canyon is the 1,900-acre H. E. Butt |
---|
31 | 32 | | Foundation Camp, which hosts more than 15,000 people each year, |
---|
32 | 33 | | with a special focus on serving youth and families who normally |
---|
33 | 34 | | would not be able to participate in retreat opportunities; other |
---|
34 | 35 | | foundation programs include the Outdoor School, which partners with |
---|
35 | 36 | | San Antonio public schools to help teachers and students experience |
---|
36 | 37 | | the outdoors, and the Laity Lodge in Leakey, which serves as a quiet |
---|
37 | 38 | | refuge where guests can reflect, pray, and participate in the arts; |

39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, For nearly a century, the H. E. Butt Foundation has |
---|
40 | 41 | | helped young people and families in Texas cultivate their physical, |
---|
41 | 42 | | mental, and spiritual wholeness, and all those associated with this |

42 | 43 | | esteemed organization may reflect with pride on their achievements; |

43 | 44 | | now, therefore, be it |

44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

45 | 46 | | Legislature hereby honor the H. E. Butt Foundation for its |
---|
46 | 47 | | outstanding service to the people of Texas; and, be it further |

47 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
48 | 49 | | prepared for the foundation as an expression of high regard by the |
---|
49 | 50 | | Texas House of Representatives. |
