7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Many proud Texans are visiting Austin on March 4, |

8 | 9 | | 2025, to celebrate Texas Southern University Day at the State |

9 | 10 | | Capitol; and |

10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, One of the nation's preeminent historically Black |
---|
11 | 12 | | colleges and universities, TSU was founded in 1927; it was |
---|
12 | 13 | | designated as a special-purpose institution of higher education for |
---|
13 | 14 | | urban programming by the Texas Legislature in 1973 and retains a |
---|
14 | 15 | | steadfast commitment to innovative approaches that respond to the |
---|
15 | 16 | | metropolitan environment and beyond; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The university now serves approximately 8,700 |
---|
17 | 18 | | undergraduate and graduate students from around the world; it |
---|
18 | 19 | | offers well over 100 baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degree |
---|
19 | 20 | | programs in numerous schools, including the Barbara Jordan-Mickey |
---|
20 | 21 | | Leland School of Public Affairs, named after two alumni who served |
---|
21 | 22 | | with distinction in the United States Congress; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, TSU is noted for its Thurgood Marshall School of Law |
---|
23 | 24 | | and its College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; the university is |
---|
24 | 25 | | also active in the Texas Legislative Internship Program, which |
---|
25 | 26 | | grants students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in |
---|
26 | 27 | | state government, alongside many legislators who share personal |
---|
27 | 28 | | ties to their alma mater; and |
---|
28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Under the leadership of its 14th president, James W. |
---|
29 | 30 | | Crawford III, retired vice admiral and judge advocate general of |
---|
30 | 31 | | the U.S. Navy, TSU has redoubled its efforts to increase student |
---|
31 | 32 | | achievement rates and academic rigor, as demonstrated by the most |
---|
32 | 33 | | recent four-year graduation rate that is the highest on record, |
---|
33 | 34 | | while expanding its research programs, enhancing its culture, and |
---|
34 | 35 | | developing stronger relationships with Houston-area public |
---|
35 | 36 | | schools, local community colleges, alumni, corporate and private |
---|
36 | 37 | | partners, government agencies, and other stakeholders; and |
---|
37 | 38 | | WHEREAS, For nearly a century, Texas Southern University has |
---|
38 | 39 | | played an important role in higher education in the Lone Star State, |
---|
39 | 40 | | and its graduates continue to achieve success and make significant |
---|
40 | 41 | | contributions in numerous fields of endeavor; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 4, 2025, as Texas Southern |
---|
43 | 44 | | University Day at the State Capitol and extend to all those |
---|
44 | 45 | | associated with the institution sincere best wishes for the future; |

46 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
