| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Wharton County are gathering in |

| 8 | 9 | | Austin on February 25, 2025, to celebrate Wharton County Day at the |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Led by Stephen F. Austin under contract with the |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Mexican government, prospective landowners first came to the plains |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | of the Colorado River in 1822; the Mexican Imperial Colonization |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | Law of 1823 granted 177 acres to the heads of families for farming |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | and 4,428 acres for raising cattle; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Wharton County was founded in April of 1846, and its |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | name commemorates two heroes of the Texas Revolution, brothers |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | William Harris Wharton and John Austin Wharton; the advent of |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | railroads and irrigation brought increased settlement to the area, |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | which remains a center of agricultural, educational, industrial, |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | and medical services for a large region; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Today, nearly 42,000 people call the county home; |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | encompassing just over 1,000 square miles of primarily prairie and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | timberland, it is divided roughly in half by the Colorado River, |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | which flows through the communities of Wharton and Glen Flora; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The county seat, Wharton, is known for its |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | small-town way of life and its Czech, Danish, and Mexican heritage, |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | as well as for its proximity to both Houston and the Gulf Coast, its |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | excellent schools and championship football teams, and its popular |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | festivals; the area also attracts visitors seeking hunting and |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | outdoor recreation opportunities; the county's other largest towns |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | include El Campo, East Bernard, Boling, and Louise; and |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, With their resilience and strong sense of community, |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | the people of Wharton County are working to preserve the best of |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | their past as they build an even brighter future, and it is indeed |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | fitting to honor them for their unique contributions to the story of |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

| 38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 25, 2025, as Wharton County |

| 39 | 40 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
