| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Houston Lawyers Association are |

| 8 | 9 | | gathering at the State Capitol in Austin on March 19, 2025; and |

| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, An affiliate chapter of the National Bar |

| 10 | 11 | | Association, the Houston Lawyers Association was established in |

| 11 | 12 | | 1955 to address the needs of Black lawyers and the Black community |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | in general after one of the association's founders, |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | Robert W. Hainsworth, challenged the Houston Bar Association's |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | policy to refuse admission for African Americans; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Today, HLA promotes education and equal justice |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | under the law through advocacy, mentoring, and coalition building; |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | to that end, the organization provides its members with a forum to |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | discuss the various issues that affect their communities, and it |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | also conducts continuing legal training seminars, evaluates |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | judicial candidates, distributes relevant information to foster |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | professional growth and development, and offers opportunities for |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | networking; and |

| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, For seven decades, HLA has served as a stalwart |

| 24 | 25 | | voice for the Black community while helping to combat injustice, |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | and this occasion provides a fitting opportunity to honor the |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | association and its members; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

| 28 | 29 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 19, 2025, as Houston Lawyers |

| 29 | 30 | | Association Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to |

| 30 | 31 | | the visiting delegation; and, be it further |

| 31 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
