67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Proud residents of the city of Pecos and Reeves
89 County are gathering in Austin on March 5, 2025, to celebrate City
910 of Pecos and Reeves County Day at the State Capitol; and
1011 WHEREAS, Situated in the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas,
1112 the area that encompasses Reeves County was first inhabited in
1213 prehistoric times and later by the Jumano and Mescalero Apache
1314 peoples as well as farmers of Mexican descent; Anglo settlers were
1415 drawn to the region's farming and ranching opportunities in the
1516 1870s, and the arrival of the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1881
1617 contributed to the area's growth and development; after separating
1718 from Pecos County, Reeves County was founded in 1884, and by the end
1819 of the century, its population numbered more than 1,200; its county
1920 seat, Pecos, was first established as a camp for cattle drives
2021 traveling up the Pecos River before becoming the site of a rail
2122 station; and
2223 WHEREAS, Today, nearly 12,000 people call Reeves County home,
2324 with almost 10,000 of those residents living in Pecos; the region's
2425 economy benefits from the ranching, agricultural, construction,
2526 and retail industries, and its location in the Permian Basin makes
2627 it a prime center for oil and gas production; in the spirit of
2728 collaboration, the city and county have formed an advisory
2829 committee that supports workforce and economic development,
2930 infrastructure, and special projects in the region; and
3031 WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike can enjoy the world's
3132 largest spring-fed swimming pool at Balmorhea State Park and
3233 immerse themselves in West Texas history at the West of the Pecos
3334 Museum; the area is also known for the West of the Pecos Rodeo,
3435 which has operated since 1883 and is one of the world's first
3536 rodeos; and
3637 WHEREAS, Preserving their vibrant past as they work together
3738 to build an even brighter future, the citizens of Pecos and Reeves
3839 County may take justifiable pride in the important role their
3940 unique area plays in the story of the Lone Star State; now,
4041 therefore, be it
4142 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4243 Legislature hereby recognize March 5, 2025, as City of Pecos and
4344 Reeves County Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to
4445 the visiting delegation.
