7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of the city of Pecos and Reeves |

8 | 9 | | County are gathering in Austin on March 5, 2025, to celebrate City |

9 | 10 | | of Pecos and Reeves County Day at the State Capitol; and |
---|
10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Situated in the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas, |
---|
11 | 12 | | the area that encompasses Reeves County was first inhabited in |
---|
12 | 13 | | prehistoric times and later by the Jumano and Mescalero Apache |
---|
13 | 14 | | peoples as well as farmers of Mexican descent; Anglo settlers were |
---|
14 | 15 | | drawn to the region's farming and ranching opportunities in the |
---|
15 | 16 | | 1870s, and the arrival of the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1881 |
---|
16 | 17 | | contributed to the area's growth and development; after separating |
---|
17 | 18 | | from Pecos County, Reeves County was founded in 1884, and by the end |
---|
18 | 19 | | of the century, its population numbered more than 1,200; its county |
---|
19 | 20 | | seat, Pecos, was first established as a camp for cattle drives |
---|
20 | 21 | | traveling up the Pecos River before becoming the site of a rail |
---|
21 | 22 | | station; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Today, nearly 12,000 people call Reeves County home, |

23 | 24 | | with almost 10,000 of those residents living in Pecos; the region's |
---|
24 | 25 | | economy benefits from the ranching, agricultural, construction, |
---|
25 | 26 | | and retail industries, and its location in the Permian Basin makes |
---|
26 | 27 | | it a prime center for oil and gas production; in the spirit of |
---|
27 | 28 | | collaboration, the city and county have formed an advisory |
---|
28 | 29 | | committee that supports workforce and economic development, |
---|
29 | 30 | | infrastructure, and special projects in the region; and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike can enjoy the world's |

31 | 32 | | largest spring-fed swimming pool at Balmorhea State Park and |
---|
32 | 33 | | immerse themselves in West Texas history at the West of the Pecos |
---|
33 | 34 | | Museum; the area is also known for the West of the Pecos Rodeo, |

34 | 35 | | which has operated since 1883 and is one of the world's first |
---|
35 | 36 | | rodeos; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Preserving their vibrant past as they work together |

37 | 38 | | to build an even brighter future, the citizens of Pecos and Reeves |

38 | 39 | | County may take justifiable pride in the important role their |
---|
39 | 40 | | unique area plays in the story of the Lone Star State; now, |

40 | 41 | | therefore, be it |

41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 5, 2025, as City of Pecos and |
---|
43 | 44 | | Reeves County Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to |

44 | 45 | | the visiting delegation. |
