67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Jack County are gathering in
89 Austin on April 29, 2025, in celebration of Jack County Day at the
910 State Capitol; and
1011 WHEREAS, Situated in the Cross Timbers and Prairies
1112 ecological region of North Central Texas, this area was originally
1213 inhabited by the Caddo and Comanche tribes; in 1856, the county was
1314 created and named for William H. and Patrick C. Jack, who were
1415 participants in the Texas Revolution; after federal troops withdrew
1516 from the region during the Civil War, Indian raids caused the
1617 population to decline; in response, the U.S. Army established Fort
1718 Richardson in 1867 to protect pioneers, and it was active until
1819 1878, when the threat of attacks had ultimately subsided; by 1880,
1920 the population had grown to more than 6,600 people, over 10 times
2021 what it had been a decade prior; and
2122 WHEREAS, In its early years, the county's economy was driven
2223 by farming and cattle ranching, with corn, grain, and cotton being
2324 key crops; the arrival of the Chicago, Rock Island and Texas Railway
2425 in 1898 brought additional growth to the area and connected it more
2526 directly with outside markets; following the discovery of oil in
2627 the 1920s, petroleum production became a significant part of life
2728 in the region; and
2829 WHEREAS, Today, Jack County is home to more than 8,800
2930 people, and its economy benefits from the oil and gas, health care,
3031 construction, and retail industries; notable communities include
3132 the county seat of Jacksboro as well as Bryson, Perrin, and Jermyn;
3233 residents and visitors alike enjoy recreational opportunities
3334 afforded by Lakes Jacksboro and Bridgeport, and outdoor enthusiasts
3435 are drawn to the region for activities such as fishing and hunting;
3536 the county also hosts a number of annual events, among them the
3637 Chili Fest and the Main Street Classic Car Show, and other
3738 attractions include Fort Richardson State Park and the Jack County
3839 Museum; and
3940 WHEREAS, Honoring their heritage as they embrace the
4041 opportunities of the future, the citizens of Jack County may take
4142 great pride in the role their communities have played in the story
4243 of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
4344 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4445 Legislature hereby recognize April 29, 2025, as Jack County Day at
4546 the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting
4647 delegation.
