7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Jack County are gathering in |

8 | 9 | | Austin on April 29, 2025, in celebration of Jack County Day at the |

9 | 10 | | State Capitol; and |
---|
10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Situated in the Cross Timbers and Prairies |
---|
11 | 12 | | ecological region of North Central Texas, this area was originally |
---|
12 | 13 | | inhabited by the Caddo and Comanche tribes; in 1856, the county was |
---|
13 | 14 | | created and named for William H. and Patrick C. Jack, who were |
---|
14 | 15 | | participants in the Texas Revolution; after federal troops withdrew |
---|
15 | 16 | | from the region during the Civil War, Indian raids caused the |
---|
16 | 17 | | population to decline; in response, the U.S. Army established Fort |
---|
17 | 18 | | Richardson in 1867 to protect pioneers, and it was active until |
---|
18 | 19 | | 1878, when the threat of attacks had ultimately subsided; by 1880, |
---|
19 | 20 | | the population had grown to more than 6,600 people, over 10 times |
---|
20 | 21 | | what it had been a decade prior; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, In its early years, the county's economy was driven |
---|
22 | 23 | | by farming and cattle ranching, with corn, grain, and cotton being |
---|
23 | 24 | | key crops; the arrival of the Chicago, Rock Island and Texas Railway |
---|
24 | 25 | | in 1898 brought additional growth to the area and connected it more |
---|
25 | 26 | | directly with outside markets; following the discovery of oil in |
---|
26 | 27 | | the 1920s, petroleum production became a significant part of life |
---|
27 | 28 | | in the region; and |

28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Today, Jack County is home to more than 8,800 |

29 | 30 | | people, and its economy benefits from the oil and gas, health care, |
---|
30 | 31 | | construction, and retail industries; notable communities include |

31 | 32 | | the county seat of Jacksboro as well as Bryson, Perrin, and Jermyn; |

32 | 33 | | residents and visitors alike enjoy recreational opportunities |

33 | 34 | | afforded by Lakes Jacksboro and Bridgeport, and outdoor enthusiasts |

34 | 35 | | are drawn to the region for activities such as fishing and hunting; |

35 | 36 | | the county also hosts a number of annual events, among them the |

36 | 37 | | Chili Fest and the Main Street Classic Car Show, and other |
---|
37 | 38 | | attractions include Fort Richardson State Park and the Jack County |

39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Honoring their heritage as they embrace the |

40 | 41 | | opportunities of the future, the citizens of Jack County may take |

41 | 42 | | great pride in the role their communities have played in the story |

42 | 43 | | of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |

43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

44 | 45 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 29, 2025, as Jack County Day at |

45 | 46 | | the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |

46 | 47 | | delegation. |
