7	8		WHEREAS, Baylor College of Medicine in 2025 is marking the
8	9		125th anniversary of its founding; and
9	10		WHEREAS, Founded in 1900 by a group of physicians in Dallas,
10	11		the school was originally named the University of Dallas Medical
11	12		Department; three years later, the school became affiliated with
12	13		Baylor University in Waco and was renamed Baylor University College
13	14		of Medicine; and
14	15		WHEREAS, In 1943, the MD Anderson Foundation invited Baylor
15	16		University College of Medicine to join the Texas Medical Center in
16	17		Houston, and the school opened with 131 students; four years later,
17	18		Baylor moved to its present site in the Roy and Lillie Cullen
18	19		Building, which is now a state-designated historical landmark; and
19	20		WHEREAS, The college became an independent institution in
20	21		1969, which allowed it access to federal research funding, and
21	22		changed its name to Baylor College of Medicine; and
22	23		WHEREAS, Today, Baylor College of Medicine is one of the top
23	24		medical research institutions in the nation; it consists of the
24	25		School of Medicine, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School
25	26		of Health Professions, and National School of Tropical Medicine;
26	27		and
27	28		WHEREAS, Baylor College of Medicine ranks first in Texas and
28	29		20th in the country in funding from the National Institutes of
29	30		Health, and it is classified as a Tier One medical school by U.S.
30	31		News & World Report; and
31	32		WHEREAS, Baylor College of Medicine is committed to the
32	33		education of the next generation of health care providers and
33	34		scientists and to ensuring there are enough medical professionals
34	35		to serve the state's residents, with nearly half of the graduating
35	36		medical students continuing their medical training in Texas; in
36	37		2023, the inaugural class of medical students started at Baylor's
37	38		regional medical school campus in Temple, in a partnership with
38	39		Baylor Scott & White Health to address the state's shortage of rural
39	40		caregivers, and 92 percent of that class consists of students from
40	41		Texas; and
41	42		WHEREAS, At the forefront of basic and translational science,
42	43		Baylor College of Medicine contributes significantly to the
43	44		understanding of diseases in humans and beyond, with the goal of
44	45		discovering how diseases develop and finding treatments and cures
45	46		for them; this distinguished work includes pioneering the field of
46	47		cardiovascular surgery, which today extends to serving as a leader
47	48		in the area of robotic heart surgery; the college also plays a major
48	49		role in sequencing the human genome, developing the field of
49	50		molecular endocrinology, and innovating lifesaving screening
50	51		techniques and a vaccine for a deadly disease in elephants; and
51	52		WHEREAS, Baylor College of Medicine serves the community
52	53		through excellent primary and specialty patient care, with its
53	54		physicians seeing patients at a number of Texas Medical Center
54	55		facilities, including Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, Texas
55	56		Children's Hospital, the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs
56	57		Medical Center, and Harris Health System; the college's physicians
57	58		also serve community health clinics in the Greater Houston area as
58	59		well as CHRISTUS Children's in San Antonio, and they further
59	60		benefit Texans through community outreach and volunteerism,
60	61		providing high-quality health care services and engaging in
61	62		initiatives to improve public health and well-being; and
62	63		WHEREAS, Baylor College of Medicine's work in the community
63	64		extends to K-12 education through the development of curriculum and
64	65		interactive teaching materials by the college's scientists and
65	66		educators for elementary and secondary school learners; the college
66	67		also offers training opportunities for local middle school and high
67	68		school science teachers, including at the Michael E. DeBakey High
68	69		School for Health Professions in Houston; through these free
69	70		programs, the college helps to promote science learning and develop
70	71		children's interest in STEM and medicine career pathways; and
71	72		WHEREAS, Baylor College of Medicine partners with a growing
72	73		number of schools and school districts across the state of Texas to
73	74		prepare youth for jobs in the health and biomedical workforce,
74	75		addressing shortages of professionals such as nurses, mental health
75	76		professionals, and clinical laboratory technicians; each year,
76	77		more than 3,000 Texas students participate in Baylor College of
77	78		Medicine-associated magnet school programs; and
78	79		WHEREAS, Dedicated to the advancement of high-quality,
79	80		ethical care in communities around the world, Baylor College of
80	81		Medicine offers pediatric and family-centered services in the areas
81	82		of HIV/AIDS, cancer, maternal health, and orthopedics, and it
82	83		provides training and technical assistance to health care
83	84		professionals, enhancing the quality of treatment in the regions
84	85		they serve; and
85	86		WHEREAS, For more than a century, Baylor College of Medicine
86	87		has been a resource of immeasurable value to the Lone Star State,
87	88		and during this milestone year, it is fitting to acknowledge its
88	89		longstanding commitment to improving health through science,
89	90		scholarship, and innovation; now, therefore, be it
90	91		RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
91	92		Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of Baylor
92	93		College of Medicine and extend to all those associated with the
93	94		institution sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
94	95		further
95	96		RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
96	97		prepared for Baylor College of Medicine as an expression of high
97	98		regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
