67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Baylor College of Medicine in 2025 is marking the
89 125th anniversary of its founding; and
910 WHEREAS, Founded in 1900 by a group of physicians in Dallas,
1011 the school was originally named the University of Dallas Medical
1112 Department; three years later, the school became affiliated with
1213 Baylor University in Waco and was renamed Baylor University College
1314 of Medicine; and
1415 WHEREAS, In 1943, the MD Anderson Foundation invited Baylor
1516 University College of Medicine to join the Texas Medical Center in
1617 Houston, and the school opened with 131 students; four years later,
1718 Baylor moved to its present site in the Roy and Lillie Cullen
1819 Building, which is now a state-designated historical landmark; and
1920 WHEREAS, The college became an independent institution in
2021 1969, which allowed it access to federal research funding, and
2122 changed its name to Baylor College of Medicine; and
2223 WHEREAS, Today, Baylor College of Medicine is one of the top
2324 medical research institutions in the nation; it consists of the
2425 School of Medicine, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School
2526 of Health Professions, and National School of Tropical Medicine;
2627 and
2728 WHEREAS, Baylor College of Medicine ranks first in Texas and
2829 20th in the country in funding from the National Institutes of
2930 Health, and it is classified as a Tier One medical school by U.S.
3031 News & World Report; and
3132 WHEREAS, Baylor College of Medicine is committed to the
3233 education of the next generation of health care providers and
3334 scientists and to ensuring there are enough medical professionals
3435 to serve the state's residents, with nearly half of the graduating
3536 medical students continuing their medical training in Texas; in
3637 2023, the inaugural class of medical students started at Baylor's
3738 regional medical school campus in Temple, in a partnership with
3839 Baylor Scott & White Health to address the state's shortage of rural
3940 caregivers, and 92 percent of that class consists of students from
4041 Texas; and
4142 WHEREAS, At the forefront of basic and translational science,
4243 Baylor College of Medicine contributes significantly to the
4344 understanding of diseases in humans and beyond, with the goal of
4445 discovering how diseases develop and finding treatments and cures
4546 for them; this distinguished work includes pioneering the field of
4647 cardiovascular surgery, which today extends to serving as a leader
4748 in the area of robotic heart surgery; the college also plays a major
4849 role in sequencing the human genome, developing the field of
4950 molecular endocrinology, and innovating lifesaving screening
5051 techniques and a vaccine for a deadly disease in elephants; and
5152 WHEREAS, Baylor College of Medicine serves the community
5253 through excellent primary and specialty patient care, with its
5354 physicians seeing patients at a number of Texas Medical Center
5455 facilities, including Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, Texas
5556 Children's Hospital, the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs
5657 Medical Center, and Harris Health System; the college's physicians
5758 also serve community health clinics in the Greater Houston area as
5859 well as CHRISTUS Children's in San Antonio, and they further
5960 benefit Texans through community outreach and volunteerism,
6061 providing high-quality health care services and engaging in
6162 initiatives to improve public health and well-being; and
6263 WHEREAS, Baylor College of Medicine's work in the community
6364 extends to K-12 education through the development of curriculum and
6465 interactive teaching materials by the college's scientists and
6566 educators for elementary and secondary school learners; the college
6667 also offers training opportunities for local middle school and high
6768 school science teachers, including at the Michael E. DeBakey High
6869 School for Health Professions in Houston; through these free
6970 programs, the college helps to promote science learning and develop
7071 children's interest in STEM and medicine career pathways; and
7172 WHEREAS, Baylor College of Medicine partners with a growing
7273 number of schools and school districts across the state of Texas to
7374 prepare youth for jobs in the health and biomedical workforce,
7475 addressing shortages of professionals such as nurses, mental health
7576 professionals, and clinical laboratory technicians; each year,
7677 more than 3,000 Texas students participate in Baylor College of
7778 Medicine-associated magnet school programs; and
7879 WHEREAS, Dedicated to the advancement of high-quality,
7980 ethical care in communities around the world, Baylor College of
8081 Medicine offers pediatric and family-centered services in the areas
8182 of HIV/AIDS, cancer, maternal health, and orthopedics, and it
8283 provides training and technical assistance to health care
8384 professionals, enhancing the quality of treatment in the regions
8485 they serve; and
8586 WHEREAS, For more than a century, Baylor College of Medicine
8687 has been a resource of immeasurable value to the Lone Star State,
8788 and during this milestone year, it is fitting to acknowledge its
8889 longstanding commitment to improving health through science,
8990 scholarship, and innovation; now, therefore, be it
9091 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
9192 Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of Baylor
9293 College of Medicine and extend to all those associated with the
9394 institution sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
9495 further
9596 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
9697 prepared for Baylor College of Medicine as an expression of high
9798 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
