| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of an outstanding career that has |

| 8 | 9 | | spanned more than a half century, Winfred A. Simmons has greatly |

| 9 | 10 | | distinguished himself as an athletics coach at schools in East |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Texas; and |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Simmons first began working as a coach in 1966 |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | at Ralph Bunche High School in Crockett; he held various positions |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | with the basketball, football, and track programs, helping the |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | school to win state championships in basketball and track as well as |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | several district titles; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, In 1974, he took a job in the Lufkin Independent |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | School District, where he continues to work today; after serving as |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | an assistant football coach and head basketball coach at Junior |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | High East for four years, Mr. Simmons joined the staff at Lufkin |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | High School in 1977; in the decades since, he has been an integral |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | part of Panther athletics, coaching young competitors in numerous |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | sports; and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, In football, Coach Simmons has been part of the |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | Panthers' gridiron program for 40 years, serving as an assistant |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | for the varsity team and as head coach and assistant coach for the |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | junior varsity squad; in basketball, he was an assistant with the |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | boys' team, including during the Panthers' state championship |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | season in 1979, and head coach of the girls' team from 2006 to 2014, |

| 29 | 30 | | when Lufkin made seven playoff appearances and advanced as far as |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | the regional finals; moreover, he has served as head coach of the |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | boys' and girls' track teams and the powerlifting team and has been |

| 32 | 33 | | an assistant coach in both sports as well; and |

| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, In addition to his achievements at Lufkin High, |

| 34 | 35 | | Coach Simmons guided football, basketball, and track teams at the |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | junior high level from 1996 to 2006, and his athletes collected |

| 36 | 37 | | numerous district titles; throughout his career, he has also |

| 37 | 38 | | frequently taken on the responsibility of driving the van or bus for |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | away games; and |

| 39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Through his dedication and leadership, Winfred |

| 40 | 41 | | Simmons has been an inspiring mentor and role model to generations |
|---|
| 41 | 42 | | of young athletes, and he is indeed deserving of recognition for his |
|---|
| 42 | 43 | | exceptional record of service; now, therefore, be it |

| 43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

| 44 | 45 | | Legislature hereby honor Winfred A. Simmons for his contributions |

| 45 | 46 | | as a school athletics coach and extend to him sincere best wishes |
