| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas are |

| 8 | 9 | | gathering in Austin on March 25, 2025, to participate in Sheriffs' |

| 9 | 10 | | Association of Texas Day at the State Capitol; and |

| 10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The office of sheriff is one of the oldest in the |

| 11 | 12 | | history of law enforcement; the Texas Constitution created the |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | office in each county of the state, and legislation requires that a |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | sheriff conserve peace and enforce the criminal laws of the state; |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | moreover, the sheriff is responsible for the county jail, bail |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | bonds, civil process, and the security of the courts, and in some |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | smaller counties, the sheriff may also act as the tax collector; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The Sheriffs' Association of Texas, which is marking |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | its 150th anniversary, is one of the nation's oldest law |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | enforcement organizations; this esteemed association held its |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | first meeting on August 14, 1874, after McLennan County sheriff Sul |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | Ross, who later became the 19th governor of the Great State of |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | Texas, issued an appeal for the sheriffs of Texas to assemble; |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | association members adopted their preamble calling for sheriffs to |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | assist one another in the execution of laws, in the discharge of |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | their duties against criminals, and in the protection of the |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | citizens in their respective counties and throughout the state; the |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | group continues to follow the dictates of this mission to this day; |
|---|

|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Sheriffs in our state's 254 counties are elected to |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | four-year terms, and each sheriff is a member of the Sheriffs' |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | Association of Texas; in addition, associate membership in the |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | organization is open to citizens who share an interest in assisting |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | law enforcement officials and supporting crime prevention and |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | policing efforts; and |

| 35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, The men and women of the Sheriffs' Association of |

| 36 | 37 | | Texas are helping to make the Lone Star State an even safer place, |
