7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the |

8 | 9 | | passing of Hays City Council member Dr. Alice Gayle Hudgens on |

9 | 10 | | November 5, 2024, at the age of 83; and |

10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of J. Don Hudgens and Evelyn Magrill |
---|
11 | 12 | | Hudgens, Gayle Hudgens was born in Artesia, New Mexico, on April 20, |
---|
12 | 13 | | 1941; growing up in a military household that moved frequently, she |
---|
13 | 14 | | demonstrated resilience and a sense of curiosity that led to a |
---|
14 | 15 | | devotion to lifelong learning; after attending the University of |
---|
15 | 16 | | New Mexico, she continued her education at The University of Texas |
---|
16 | 17 | | at Austin, earning master's degrees in both Latin American studies |
---|
17 | 18 | | and library science, as well as a doctorate in educational |
---|
18 | 19 | | administration; she was a Ford Foundation Scholar and successfully |
---|
19 | 20 | | pursued further studies in sustainability and in business and |
---|
20 | 21 | | personal coaching; at the time of the Kennedy assassination in |
---|
21 | 22 | | 1963, she was an assistant press secretary to Governor John |
---|
22 | 23 | | Connally; she later worked as a reference librarian for UT's Latin |
---|
23 | 24 | | American Collection and became a prolific author and scholar; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Hudgens was an ardent activist, engaging in the |
---|
25 | 26 | | founding of the North Texas Greens and the Emerging Public Issues |
---|
26 | 27 | | Corporation; she championed whistleblowing against government |
---|
27 | 28 | | corruption and reported on a radioactive landfill on the Mescalero |
---|
28 | 29 | | Apache Reservation in a seven-part newspaper series; dedicated to |
---|
29 | 30 | | her community, she was a regional registrar for the Daughters of the |
---|
30 | 31 | | American Revolution and wrote a gardening column for the Hays Free |
---|
31 | 32 | | Press in Hays County for many years; her love of nature extended to |
---|
32 | 33 | | a host of pets, including cats, dogs, and goats, and her spiritual |
---|
33 | 34 | | journey eventually culminated in her embrace of Quakerism; in all |
---|
34 | 35 | | her endeavors, she enjoyed the love and support of her husband of |
---|
35 | 36 | | more than four decades, Harvey Davis; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Although Gayle Hudgens is deeply missed, those she |
---|
37 | 38 | | left behind will continue to find inspiration in her warmth, zest |
---|
38 | 39 | | for knowledge, and commitment to fostering peace, health, and |
---|
39 | 40 | | happiness for all; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

41 | 42 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Alice Gayle |
---|
42 | 43 | | Hudgens and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to |

43 | 44 | | her husband, Harvey L. Davis Jr.; to her children, Hal Watson III |
---|
44 | 45 | | and his wife, Nancy, and Amy Logan; to her stepson, Robert Davis; to |

45 | 46 | | her grandchildren, Brett, Wendy, and Ross Watson and Vaughan Logan; |

46 | 47 | | and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further |

47 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
