7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The Texas State University community is mourning the |

8 | 9 | | loss of Dr. Audwin LaBarron Anderson, a beloved professor and a |

9 | 10 | | friend to many, who passed away on January 9, 2025, at the age of 66; |
---|

---|
11 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Born on July 2, 1958, Audwin Anderson earned his |
---|
12 | 13 | | bachelor's and master's degrees in sociology from Texas State |
---|
13 | 14 | | University and completed his doctoral degree at Texas A&M |
---|
14 | 15 | | University; he wrote his dissertation on "Race, Interscholastic |
---|
15 | 16 | | Athletic Participation, and Early Educational Achievement in the |
---|
16 | 17 | | United States"; in 1989, he joined the faculty of the University of |
---|
17 | 18 | | South Alabama, and five years later, he began his exemplary career |
---|
18 | 19 | | at Texas State; he served in a number of leadership roles, including |
---|
19 | 20 | | director of the Center for Diversity and Gender Studies and |
---|
20 | 21 | | director of sociology graduate programs; following his retirement |
---|
21 | 22 | | in 2024, he was named associate professor emeritus; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Anderson focused his research on social theory, |
---|
23 | 24 | | race/ethnicity, and inequality; a brilliant, kind, and inspiring |
---|
24 | 25 | | teacher, he brought topics to life for his students and sparked |
---|
25 | 26 | | thoughtful, challenging, and exciting debates and discussions; he |
---|
26 | 27 | | was exceptionally supportive of young scholars, going above and |
---|
27 | 28 | | beyond to help them advance academically; over the years, he |
---|
28 | 29 | | received such accolades as the Excellence in Teaching Award from |
---|
29 | 30 | | the College of Liberal Arts and the Phi Kappa Phi Favorite |
---|
30 | 31 | | Professors Award; he mentored fellow educators as well as students, |
---|
31 | 32 | | and they often sought him out for wise counsel, joyful laughter, and |
---|
32 | 33 | | engaging conversations about politics, music, and sports; his |
---|
33 | 34 | | knowledge of jazz and blues was encyclopedic, and he was a great fan |
---|
34 | 35 | | of baseball, especially his Atlanta Braves; and |
---|
35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of three decades at Texas State |
---|
36 | 37 | | University, Audwin Anderson enriched the lives of innumerable |
---|
37 | 38 | | people, and he will be remembered with great admiration and |
---|
38 | 39 | | affection by all who were fortunate enough to know him; now, |
---|
39 | 40 | | therefore, be it |

40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

41 | 42 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Audwin L. Anderson |

42 | 43 | | and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his passing; and, be |
