| 10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Matagorda County, one of the oldest counties in |

| 11 | 12 | | Texas, derives its name from the Spanish term for "thick brush," |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | referencing the canebrakes that once lined its shores along the |

| 13 | 14 | | Gulf Coast; located between Galveston and Corpus Christi, 72 miles |

| 14 | 15 | | southwest of Houston, the county offers residents easy access to a |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | major metropolitan area while preserving the quiet lifestyle of a |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | rural South Texas community; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Bay City, the county seat of Matagorda County, is |

| 18 | 19 | | often called the "Gateway to the Great Outdoors"; founded in 1894, |

| 20 | 21 | | prairie, which has been known as "Bay Prairie" since the time of |

| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Matagorda County is known for its abundant wildlife, |

| 29 | 30 | | the country during certain times of the year; its marshes, coastal |

| 31 | 32 | | opportunities, with three Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail loops |

| 32 | 33 | | encompassing 17 observation sites; the Matagorda County Birding |

| 33 | 34 | | Nature Center and LCRA Matagorda Bay Nature Park are ideal places to |

| 34 | 35 | | learn about birds, gardening, wildlife, and native plants; in |

| 35 | 36 | | addition to its avian attractions, the county's bays are teeming |

| 44 | 45 | | and Roehm America LLC to the area; moreover, Matagorda County is |

| 45 | 46 | | seeing significant growth in residential development, with over 800 |

| 46 | 47 | | housing starts, as well as an influx of new retail outlets and |

| 48 | 49 | | WHEREAS, Matagorda County is blessed with a rich history and |

| 49 | 50 | | abundant natural resources, and its residents may take great pride |

| 50 | 51 | | in their county's legacy and bright future; now, therefore, be it |

| 51 | 52 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
