67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Many notable citizens of Lubbock are visiting the
89 Texas Capitol on February 19, 2025, to pay tribute to their city's
910 rich heritage and to celebrate Lubbock Day; and
1011 WHEREAS, Located within the Llano Estacado, Lubbock was
1112 established in an area that was known for its tough conditions; as a
1213 result, it was settled long after many other parts of the North
1314 American continent, and the citizens who reside there today reflect
1415 the same welcoming and resilient pioneer spirit as the early
1516 founders; and
1617 WHEREAS, The City of Lubbock was incorporated on March 16,
1718 1909; railroads, farming, and ranching stimulated the city's growth
1819 as a trade center, and when legislation creating Texas
1920 Technological College was passed in 1923, the site selection
2021 committee, impressed by the enthusiasm and hospitality of its
2122 citizens, chose Lubbock for its location; and
2223 WHEREAS, Today, with a metropolitan area of more than 400,000
2324 people, Lubbock is home to the Texas Tech University System and its
2425 flagship institutions, Texas Tech University and the Texas Tech
2526 Health Sciences Center, both world-renowned organizations; and
2627 WHEREAS, The Texas Tech Health Sciences Center attracts
2728 nearly 5,500 students from around the world and is currently ranked
2829 as the number one health university in the nation by the
2930 SR Education Group, ranking higher than programs at rival Ivy
3031 League colleges; and
3132 WHEREAS, Lubbock is consistently recognized by national
3233 organizations for its business-friendly atmosphere, including
3334 being named the number one city for women professionals; it is
3435 ranked in the top 20 cities for young entrepreneurs starting a
3536 business and was named seventh in the Forbes list of top
3637 "Opportunity Cities," based on its low cost of living, its cultural
3738 resources, and the strength of its business community; and
3839 WHEREAS, Lubbock has a diverse economy that draws its
3940 strength from agribusiness, manufacturing, and oil and gas, as well
4041 as from educational and health care services, entertainment, and
4142 the largest medical infrastructure in Texas west of I-35; the
4243 city's meticulously planned infrastructure has resulted in a
4344 low-traffic community with more neighborhood parks per capita than
4445 any other city in Texas; and
4546 WHEREAS, With the growth of the cotton industry on the
4647 High Plains, Lubbock has become one of the world's primary centers
4748 for the processing of cottonseed and hybrid-grain sorghum seed;
4849 moreover, the region just north of Lubbock has the highest density
4950 of cattle in the entire country; Lubbock is now the home of several
5051 major award-winning wineries and vineyards that produce more than
5152 80 percent of the state's wine grapes; and
5253 WHEREAS, Lubbock offers a wealth of cultural and recreational
5354 opportunities, including the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, Ballet
5455 Lubbock, the Silent Wings Museum, the Museum and Planetarium of
5556 Texas Tech University, the new Buddy Holly Hall, a state-of-the-art
5657 performing arts center, and many more; those wanting a glimpse of
5758 frontier history can find it in the restored structures at the
5859 National Ranching Heritage Center, a 15-acre site tracing the
5960 evolution of ranch operations, architecture, and the history and
6061 traditions of the cattle industry; the region's history is also
6162 celebrated at the ever-expanding FiberMax Center for Discovery and
6263 the picturesque American Windmill Museum; and
6364 WHEREAS, The talented musicians who have come from the
6465 Lubbock area include Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Roy Orbison, the
6566 Maines family, Virgil Johnson and the Velvets, Waylon Jennings, Mac
6667 Davis, Tanya Tucker, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock,
6768 The Flatlanders, Jon Baumann, The Chicks, Flatland Cavalry, and
6869 Josh Abbott, as well as Texas Tech alumni John Denver, Pat Green,
6970 and William Clark Green; their rich and diverse contributions have
7071 earned Lubbock recognition as the Music Crossroads of Texas; and
7172 WHEREAS, Lubbock's thriving commerce is represented by the
7273 largest business federation on the Texas South Plains, the Lubbock
7374 Chamber of Commerce, which expands and guards the prosperity of the
7475 Lubbock area; and
7576 WHEREAS, Early major achievements propelled by the chamber of
7677 commerce during more than a century of service include recruiting
7778 farmers from out of state to produce crops on the fertile soils of
7879 the Llano Estacado, working to bring the railroad to Lubbock,
7980 establishing the South Plains Fair, and drafting and delivering to
8081 the Texas Capitol the application that would result in establishing
8182 Texas Technological College, which today is the heart of the
8283 Texas Tech University System; and
8384 WHEREAS, The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce was instrumental in
8485 establishing Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport, Reese
8586 Air Force Base, and outstanding transportation infrastructure, and
8687 it was the first chamber of commerce in Texas to introduce an
8788 Association Health Plan for 34 West Texas counties, which became a
8889 model nationwide; and
8990 WHEREAS, Among the delegation visiting the Capitol today are
9091 members of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce's 47th Leadership
9192 Lubbock Class, who represent the business and community leaders of
9293 Lubbock; and
9394 WHEREAS, The citizens of Lubbock have truly kept faith with
9495 the founders of their West Texas community; renowned for their
9596 faith, hospitality, and warmth as well as their hardiness and
9697 determination, they have helped to build a vital urban center that
9798 serves not only a large part of West Texas but also the surrounding
9899 region; now, therefore, be it
99100 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
100101 Legislature hereby recognize February 19, 2025, as Lubbock Day at
101102 the State Capitol and extend to the members of the visiting
102103 delegation and all their fellow citizens sincere appreciation for
103104 the bright dusty aura they add to the Lone Star State.
