| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the |

| 8 | 9 | | passing of Mary Burney McMahon Markham on September 2, 2023, at the |

| 9 | 10 | | age of 83; and |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The former Mary McMahon was born in Fort Worth on |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | August 16, 1940, to Frieda Taliaferro McMahon and Robert McMahon; |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | she was raised with her siblings, Frieda and Marshall, in Tarrant |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | County, spending time at the family farm near White Settlement, in |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Arlington, and in Fort Worth, where she graduated from Paschal High |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | School in 1958; she studied at Texas Tech University and Texas |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Christian University before finishing her bachelor's degree in |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | education at North Texas State University, and she went on to |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | distinguish herself in her work as an elementary school teacher; |
|---|

| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, She wed David Markham on June 3, 1961, and they |

| 21 | 22 | | shared a rewarding marriage that spanned more than six decades |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | before his passing in 2022; the couple became the parents of a |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | daughter, Meribeth, and a son, Steven, and the family settled in |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | Dallas in 1972; through the years, Mrs. Markham devoted herself to |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | caring for her husband and children and later became the beloved |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | "Mermer" to six grandchildren; her generosity and thoughtfulness |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | made the Markham home a welcoming destination for a wide circle of |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | family and friends; and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Markham was a member of St. John's Episcopal |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | Church in Dallas, where she served on the altar guild; an avid |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | traveler, she had the opportunity to visit locations around the |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | globe while accompanying her husband on business trips; and |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Although Mary Markham will be greatly missed, she |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | has left her loved ones with a wealth of memories that they will |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | forever cherish; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

| 37 | 38 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Mary Burney McMahon |

| 38 | 39 | | Markham and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to |

| 39 | 40 | | her children, Meribeth Wilkinson and her husband, Rick, and Steven |

| 40 | 41 | | Markham and his wife, Sabine; to her grandchildren; to her sister, |

| 41 | 42 | | Frieda Thomas; to her brother, Dr. Marshall McMahon; and to her |
