| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Kidney Month is being observed in March 2025 across |

| 8 | 9 | | Texas and throughout the United States; and |

| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant health |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | concern affecting individuals nationwide, with millions more at |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | risk of developing the disease; nine out of ten people with early |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | kidney disease are unaware of their condition because symptoms |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | typically do not manifest until its later stages; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Chronic kidney disease progresses through five |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | stages, culminating in end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | requires treatment through dialysis or a kidney transplant; the |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | incidence of ESRD has risen substantially in the last two decades; |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, In the state of Texas alone, more than 76,000 |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | residents are living with kidney failure, and of that group, |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | approximately 56,000 are undergoing dialysis and over 20,000 have |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | received kidney transplants; Texans are at an elevated risk of CKD |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | due to the high prevalence of diabetes and hypertension, and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | minority populations also represent a disproportionate number of |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | those affected; Black Americans are four times more likely than |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | White Americans to develop kidney failure; and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Early detection and timely treatment offer the best |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | hope of slowing the progression of kidney disease, and the |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | observance of Kidney Month in March provides a fitting opportunity |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | to call attention to kidney disease and to rally support for |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | prevention efforts that can potentially save lives; now, therefore, |
|---|

| 33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 2025 as Kidney Month and |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | encourage Texans to learn more about the symptoms and risk factors |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | for chronic kidney disease. |
