7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Mary Burns Michael is receiving the Outstanding |

8 | 9 | | Texan Award for House District 124 from the Texas Legislative Black |

9 | 10 | | Caucus on March 19, 2025; and |

10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, A fitting recipient of this honor, Ms. Michael was |

11 | 12 | | born in rural Georgia and earned a bachelor's degree in education |
---|
12 | 13 | | from Albany State College in 1955; over the course of her 35-year |
---|
13 | 14 | | career, she taught at schools in Georgia and Texas as well as in |
---|
14 | 15 | | Japan with the Department of Defense Overseas School System; along |
---|
15 | 16 | | the way, she was nominated for many awards, including the Trinity |
---|
16 | 17 | | Prize for excellence in teaching, and she received the Shining Star |
---|
17 | 18 | | Award, Mentoring Award, and Black Achievement Award for Excellence |
---|
18 | 19 | | in Education; she retired in 1992, and the Northside Independent |
---|
19 | 20 | | School District in San Antonio named Michael Elementary School in |
---|
20 | 21 | | recognition of her many years of service; this beloved educator |
---|
21 | 22 | | continues to make frequent visits to the campus and to serve in |
---|
22 | 23 | | advisory roles with Northside ISD; and |

23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Michael has also found time to give back to the |

24 | 25 | | greater community; she volunteered as the unit chaplain for |
---|
25 | 26 | | Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Unit 128, where she strove to |
---|
26 | 27 | | help veterans in need; as the group's community service chair, she |
---|
27 | 28 | | created the Baskets of Joy program at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial |
---|
28 | 29 | | and Kerrville VA Medical Centers to provide care packages to |
---|
29 | 30 | | veterans staying at those facilities; in addition to her work for |
---|
30 | 31 | | the VA, she has held membership in the San Antonio Storytellers, and |
---|
31 | 32 | | she is a former consultant for Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Publishers; |
---|

33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Through her myriad contributions, Mary Burns |

34 | 35 | | Michael has made a positive difference in the lives of countless |

35 | 36 | | Texans, and she is indeed deserving of special recognition for |

36 | 37 | | being a force for good in her community; now, therefore, be it |
