67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Mary Burns Michael is receiving the Outstanding
89 Texan Award for House District 124 from the Texas Legislative Black
910 Caucus on March 19, 2025; and
1011 WHEREAS, A fitting recipient of this honor, Ms. Michael was
1112 born in rural Georgia and earned a bachelor's degree in education
1213 from Albany State College in 1955; over the course of her 35-year
1314 career, she taught at schools in Georgia and Texas as well as in
1415 Japan with the Department of Defense Overseas School System; along
1516 the way, she was nominated for many awards, including the Trinity
1617 Prize for excellence in teaching, and she received the Shining Star
1718 Award, Mentoring Award, and Black Achievement Award for Excellence
1819 in Education; she retired in 1992, and the Northside Independent
1920 School District in San Antonio named Michael Elementary School in
2021 recognition of her many years of service; this beloved educator
2122 continues to make frequent visits to the campus and to serve in
2223 advisory roles with Northside ISD; and
2324 WHEREAS, Ms. Michael has also found time to give back to the
2425 greater community; she volunteered as the unit chaplain for
2526 Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Unit 128, where she strove to
2627 help veterans in need; as the group's community service chair, she
2728 created the Baskets of Joy program at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial
2829 and Kerrville VA Medical Centers to provide care packages to
2930 veterans staying at those facilities; in addition to her work for
3031 the VA, she has held membership in the San Antonio Storytellers, and
3132 she is a former consultant for Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Publishers;

3334 WHEREAS, Through her myriad contributions, Mary Burns
3435 Michael has made a positive difference in the lives of countless
3536 Texans, and she is indeed deserving of special recognition for
3637 being a force for good in her community; now, therefore, be it
3738 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
3839 Legislature hereby congratulate Mary Burns Michael on her receipt
3940 of a 2025 Outstanding Texan Award from the Texas Legislative Black
4041 Caucus and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be
4142 it further
4243 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4344 prepared for Ms. Michael as an expression of high regard by the
4445 Texas House of Representatives.
