| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The 25th anniversary of the Roman Catholic Diocese |

| 8 | 9 | | of Laredo is taking place in 2025, providing a fitting opportunity |

| 9 | 10 | | to recognize Bishop James Anthony Tamayo, who has guided the |

| 10 | 11 | | diocese since its establishment; and |

| 11 | 12 | | WHEREAS, In August 2000, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop |

| 12 | 13 | | Tamayo to oversee the newly created Diocese of Laredo and to |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | minister the unique pastoral needs of South Texas; during his |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | exemplary tenure, Bishop Tamayo has worked to build a strong and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | unified diocese that serves a diverse and growing population of |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | parishioners; he has promoted a culture of faith that prioritizes |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | outreach and community service, and he has guided the development |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | of numerous initiatives that promote social justice and education |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | in the region; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Bishop Tamayo draws on many decades of experience in |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | the clergy; a native of Brownsville, he was ordained as a priest in |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | 1976, and he went on to serve in numerous capacities in the Diocese |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | of Corpus Christi over the course of more than 16 years; from 1993 |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | until his appointment as bishop, he distinguished himself in his |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | role as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston, and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | he has also served in a range of leadership roles at the national |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | level; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Bishop Tamayo's compassionate leadership has |

| 29 | 30 | | greatly benefited the Diocese of Laredo, and his efforts over the |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | past quarter century are greatly appreciated by the residents of |

| 31 | 32 | | South Texas; now, therefore, be it |

| 32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

| 33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby commend Bishop James Anthony Tamayo on the |

| 34 | 35 | | occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Diocese of Laredo and extend |

| 35 | 36 | | to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
