7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Children's Learning Centers of Amarillo is |

8 | 9 | | celebrating its 100th anniversary on April 1, 2025; and |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The nonprofit day-care organization was founded as |
---|
10 | 11 | | Amarillo Day Nurseries on April 1, 1925, under the direction of the |
---|
11 | 12 | | Potter County Federation of Women's Clubs; a year later, it was |
---|
12 | 13 | | gifted a new building, and the Social Welfare Association took over |
---|
13 | 14 | | as its governing body, with The Child Study Clubs sponsoring its |
---|
14 | 15 | | nurseries; incorporated in March 1931, its facilities saw the |
---|
15 | 16 | | addition of toddler and infant units over the course of the ensuing |
---|
16 | 17 | | decade, and by 1939, the nursery had more than 50 children in its |
---|
17 | 18 | | care; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, In 1964, the McLellan Day Nursery was constructed |
---|
19 | 20 | | using surplus funds from recent polio immunization campaigns, and |
---|
20 | 21 | | the Watley Day Nursery was later added with a donation from the |
---|
21 | 22 | | Kilgore Foundation; in May 1985, the organization underwent a final |
---|
22 | 23 | | name change to Children's Learning Centers of Amarillo, Inc., and |
---|
23 | 24 | | it merged with the Young Women's Christian Organization the |
---|
24 | 25 | | following year; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, In 1993, the Lawrence R. Hagy Child Care Center |
---|
26 | 27 | | opened in the Medipark campus, with CLC managing and staffing the |
---|
27 | 28 | | facility; that same year, the former YWCO building was renamed the |
---|
28 | 29 | | Sybil B. Harrington Center, and Hazel Kelley Wilson and her family |
---|
29 | 30 | | donated their home, which came to be known as the Hazel Kelley |
---|
30 | 31 | | Wilson Infant Center; and |
---|
31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The Herzstein Learning Center was added in 1994, |

32 | 33 | | with funding from the Ethel and Albert Herzstein Living Trust and |
---|
33 | 34 | | construction and land gifted by the Loewenstern family; over the |
---|
34 | 35 | | course of the early 2000s, CLC saw the further addition of a number |
---|
35 | 36 | | of buildings, including the Sybil B. Harrington Learning Center, |
---|
36 | 37 | | Kimble Learning Center, and Curtis-Flemming Learning Center; and |
---|
37 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Today, CLC operates out of seven facilities, and in |
---|
38 | 39 | | recent years, it has served as many as 500 families; the |
---|
39 | 40 | | organization benefits from the able guidance of executive director |
---|
40 | 41 | | Steve Burton and assistant executive director Tiffani Threet; and |
---|
41 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Over the past century, Children's Learning Centers |
---|
42 | 43 | | has provided Amarillo families with high-quality child care, and in |
---|
43 | 44 | | so doing, it has made a lasting, positive difference in the |
---|
44 | 45 | | community; now, therefore, be it |
---|
45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
46 | 47 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Children's Learning Centers on its |
---|
47 | 48 | | 100th anniversary and extend to all those affiliated with the |
---|
48 | 49 | | organization sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
---|
49 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
50 | 51 | | prepared for Children's Learning Centers as an expression of high |
---|
51 | 52 | | regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
