67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Children's Learning Centers of Amarillo is
89 celebrating its 100th anniversary on April 1, 2025; and
910 WHEREAS, The nonprofit day-care organization was founded as
1011 Amarillo Day Nurseries on April 1, 1925, under the direction of the
1112 Potter County Federation of Women's Clubs; a year later, it was
1213 gifted a new building, and the Social Welfare Association took over
1314 as its governing body, with The Child Study Clubs sponsoring its
1415 nurseries; incorporated in March 1931, its facilities saw the
1516 addition of toddler and infant units over the course of the ensuing
1617 decade, and by 1939, the nursery had more than 50 children in its
1718 care; and
1819 WHEREAS, In 1964, the McLellan Day Nursery was constructed
1920 using surplus funds from recent polio immunization campaigns, and
2021 the Watley Day Nursery was later added with a donation from the
2122 Kilgore Foundation; in May 1985, the organization underwent a final
2223 name change to Children's Learning Centers of Amarillo, Inc., and
2324 it merged with the Young Women's Christian Organization the
2425 following year; and
2526 WHEREAS, In 1993, the Lawrence R. Hagy Child Care Center
2627 opened in the Medipark campus, with CLC managing and staffing the
2728 facility; that same year, the former YWCO building was renamed the
2829 Sybil B. Harrington Center, and Hazel Kelley Wilson and her family
2930 donated their home, which came to be known as the Hazel Kelley
3031 Wilson Infant Center; and
3132 WHEREAS, The Herzstein Learning Center was added in 1994,
3233 with funding from the Ethel and Albert Herzstein Living Trust and
3334 construction and land gifted by the Loewenstern family; over the
3435 course of the early 2000s, CLC saw the further addition of a number
3536 of buildings, including the Sybil B. Harrington Learning Center,
3637 Kimble Learning Center, and Curtis-Flemming Learning Center; and
3738 WHEREAS, Today, CLC operates out of seven facilities, and in
3839 recent years, it has served as many as 500 families; the
3940 organization benefits from the able guidance of executive director
4041 Steve Burton and assistant executive director Tiffani Threet; and
4142 WHEREAS, Over the past century, Children's Learning Centers
4243 has provided Amarillo families with high-quality child care, and in
4344 so doing, it has made a lasting, positive difference in the
4445 community; now, therefore, be it
4546 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4647 Legislature hereby congratulate Children's Learning Centers on its
4748 100th anniversary and extend to all those affiliated with the
4849 organization sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4950 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5051 prepared for Children's Learning Centers as an expression of high
5152 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
