67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Kleberg County are gathering in
89 Austin on March 5, 2025, to celebrate Kleberg County Day at the
910 State Capitol; and
1011 WHEREAS, Situated both on the broad grasslands of the Gulf
1112 Coast and on Padre Island, the area that was to become Kleberg
1213 County was first inhabited by the Karankawa and Coahuiltecan
1314 peoples; Spanish settlements were established along the lower
1415 Rio Grande in the 18th century, and after a period of Mexican rule,
1516 the land became part of Nueces County when Texas secured its
1617 independence; in 1853, Richard King established the vast King
1718 Ranch, a large tract of which was used to form the city of
1819 Kingsville in 1904; the new community grew quickly as a railway hub
1920 for farmers and ranchers, and in 1913, the Texas Legislature
2021 organized Kleberg County, naming it for Robert Justus Kleberg,
2122 whose son was the manager of King Ranch, and designating Kingsville
2223 as the county seat; and
2324 WHEREAS, Today, Kleberg County is a place of diversified
2425 industries; successful businesses include Proco, Inc., Kleberg
2526 Bank, and numerous energy companies; occupying 825,000 acres, the
2627 legendary King Ranch is still vital to the prosperity of the county,
2728 and the enterprise has earned fame for the region through its
2829 development of the Santa Gertrudis breed of cattle, its
2930 contributions to quarter horse and thoroughbred breeding, and its
3031 accomplishments in a variety of other agribusiness interests; and
3132 WHEREAS, The largest city in Kleberg County, Kingsville is
3233 home to Texas A&M University-Kingsville, which includes the Frank
3334 H. Dotterweich College of Engineering, the Dick and Mary Lewis
3435 Kleberg College of Agriculture, the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife
3536 Research Institute, and the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy;
3637 meeting an increasingly critical military need, Naval Air Station
3738 Kingsville trains 50 percent of United States Navy and Marine Corps
3839 tactical jet pilots every year; and
3940 WHEREAS, Kleberg County benefits from the dedicated
4041 leadership of its elected officials, including county
4142 commissioners David Rosse, Chuck Schultz, Jerry Martinez, and
4243 Marcus Salinas, and county judge Rudy Madrid; and
4344 WHEREAS, The hardworking and forward-looking citizens of
4445 Kleberg County are building on a long tradition of excellence, and
4546 their history and achievements are indeed deserving of special
4647 recognition; now, therefore, be it
4748 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4849 Legislature hereby recognize March 5, 2025, as Kleberg County Day
4950 at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting
5051 delegation.
