7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Kleberg County are gathering in |

8 | 9 | | Austin on March 5, 2025, to celebrate Kleberg County Day at the |

9 | 10 | | State Capitol; and |

10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Situated both on the broad grasslands of the Gulf |
---|
11 | 12 | | Coast and on Padre Island, the area that was to become Kleberg |
---|
12 | 13 | | County was first inhabited by the Karankawa and Coahuiltecan |
---|
13 | 14 | | peoples; Spanish settlements were established along the lower |
---|
14 | 15 | | Rio Grande in the 18th century, and after a period of Mexican rule, |
---|
15 | 16 | | the land became part of Nueces County when Texas secured its |
---|
16 | 17 | | independence; in 1853, Richard King established the vast King |
---|
17 | 18 | | Ranch, a large tract of which was used to form the city of |
---|
18 | 19 | | Kingsville in 1904; the new community grew quickly as a railway hub |
---|
19 | 20 | | for farmers and ranchers, and in 1913, the Texas Legislature |
---|
20 | 21 | | organized Kleberg County, naming it for Robert Justus Kleberg, |

21 | 22 | | whose son was the manager of King Ranch, and designating Kingsville |

23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Today, Kleberg County is a place of diversified |

24 | 25 | | industries; successful businesses include Proco, Inc., Kleberg |

25 | 26 | | Bank, and numerous energy companies; occupying 825,000 acres, the |

26 | 27 | | legendary King Ranch is still vital to the prosperity of the county, |

27 | 28 | | and the enterprise has earned fame for the region through its |
---|
28 | 29 | | development of the Santa Gertrudis breed of cattle, its |
---|
29 | 30 | | contributions to quarter horse and thoroughbred breeding, and its |
---|
30 | 31 | | accomplishments in a variety of other agribusiness interests; and |

31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The largest city in Kleberg County, Kingsville is |
---|
32 | 33 | | home to Texas A&M University-Kingsville, which includes the Frank |
---|
33 | 34 | | H. Dotterweich College of Engineering, the Dick and Mary Lewis |
---|
34 | 35 | | Kleberg College of Agriculture, the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife |
---|
35 | 36 | | Research Institute, and the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy; |
---|
36 | 37 | | meeting an increasingly critical military need, Naval Air Station |
---|
37 | 38 | | Kingsville trains 50 percent of United States Navy and Marine Corps |

38 | 39 | | tactical jet pilots every year; and |

39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Kleberg County benefits from the dedicated |

40 | 41 | | leadership of its elected officials, including county |

41 | 42 | | commissioners David Rosse, Chuck Schultz, Jerry Martinez, and |

42 | 43 | | Marcus Salinas, and county judge Rudy Madrid; and |

43 | 44 | | WHEREAS, The hardworking and forward-looking citizens of |

44 | 45 | | Kleberg County are building on a long tradition of excellence, and |

45 | 46 | | their history and achievements are indeed deserving of special |

46 | 47 | | recognition; now, therefore, be it |

47 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
48 | 49 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 5, 2025, as Kleberg County Day |
---|
49 | 50 | | at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
---|
50 | 51 | | delegation. |
