| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Calhoun County are gathering in Austin |

| 8 | 9 | | on March 20, 2025, to observe Calhoun County Day at the State |

| 9 | 10 | | Capitol; and |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Located on the Gulf Coast between Houston and Corpus |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Christi, Calhoun County was formed in 1846 from parts of Victoria, |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Jackson, and Matagorda Counties and took its name from |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | John C. Calhoun, a politician from South Carolina who advocated for |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Texas statehood; Lavaca served as the first county seat, and though |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | the county seat was later moved to Indianola, it returned to the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | renamed Port Lavaca in 1887; the county features several other |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | notable communities, including Point Comfort, which sits on the |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | opposite side of Lavaca Bay from Port Lavaca, Seadrift on the San |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | Antonio Bay, and Port O'Connor, located on the Gulf Intracoastal |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Waterway; and |

| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Boasting around 560 miles of coastline and extensive |

| 22 | 23 | | coastal prairies and marshes, Calhoun County is a popular fishing |

| 23 | 24 | | destination, and the eight Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail sites |

| 24 | 25 | | in the county provide birders and wildlife photographers an |

| 25 | 26 | | opportunity to see more than 400 species of birds; residents and |

| 26 | 27 | | visitors also enjoy a number of annual events, including the |

| 27 | 28 | | Calhoun County Fair, Iguana Fest, and the Bayfront Beats summer |

| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Calhoun County benefits from the dedicated |

| 30 | 31 | | leadership of its elected officials, including county judge Vern |

| 31 | 32 | | Lyssy and county commissioners David Hall, Ronald Best, |

| 32 | 33 | | Joel M. Behrens, and Gary Reese; and |

| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich and colorful history as they |

| 34 | 35 | | work together to build a bright future, the citizens of Calhoun |

| 35 | 36 | | County may take justifiable pride in the important role their |

| 36 | 37 | | unique region continues to play in the story of the Lone Star State; |

| 38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

| 39 | 40 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 20, 2025, as Calhoun County Day |
