7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The Voces Oral History Center at The University of |

8 | 9 | | Texas at Austin celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024; and |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1999, the Voces Oral History Center has |
---|
10 | 11 | | documented, preserved, and disseminated the stories of more than |
---|
11 | 12 | | 1,800 Latinos across the United States; its original mission was to |
---|
12 | 13 | | capture the untold stories of Latinos who served during World War |
---|
13 | 14 | | II, and its vision has since expanded to include stories |
---|
14 | 15 | | surrounding the Korean and Vietnam Wars as well as political and |
---|
15 | 16 | | civic engagement with a focus on the continuing movement for |
---|
16 | 17 | | Latinos' civil rights; and |
---|
17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The leading Latino oral history archive in the |
---|
18 | 19 | | nation, Voces holds a vast collection of photographs, interviews, |
---|
19 | 20 | | and information, serving as a resource for many journalists, |
---|
20 | 21 | | textbook publishers, and academics; the center has assisted the |
---|
21 | 22 | | National WWII Museum in New Orleans, the StoryCorps Historias |
---|
22 | 23 | | initiative, and numerous PBS documentarians; and |
---|
23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The founder and director of Voces, |
---|
24 | 25 | | Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez, is a former journalist who remains active |
---|
25 | 26 | | in the field as a professor at the UT Moody College of |
---|
26 | 27 | | Communication's School of Journalism and Media; under her |
---|
27 | 28 | | leadership, writers, photographers, and audio/video specialists, |
---|
28 | 29 | | many of whom are UT communication students, produce the archives, |
---|
29 | 30 | | and they collaborate with the Voces Resource and Scholars Councils |
---|
30 | 31 | | to further the project's impact through support, networking, and |
---|
31 | 32 | | fundraising; and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, The Voces Oral History Center has excelled in its |

33 | 34 | | efforts to document the experiences and contributions of Latinos in |
---|
34 | 35 | | the United States, and all those associated with the archive may |
---|
35 | 36 | | take justifiable pride in its achievements over the past quarter |
---|
36 | 37 | | century; now, therefore, be it |

37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby congratulate the Voces Oral History Center at |

39 | 40 | | The University of Texas at Austin on its 25th anniversary and |
---|
40 | 41 | | commend its staff on their exemplary work; and, be it further |

41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
