7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Carrizo Springs are gathering in |

8 | 9 | | Austin on March 31, 2025, in celebration of Carrizo Springs Day at |

9 | 10 | | the State Capitol; and |
---|
10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The oldest settlement in Dimmit County, Carrizo |
---|
11 | 12 | | Springs was named by Spanish explorers for its springs and for the |
---|
12 | 13 | | cane grass that grew around them; the town was founded in 1865 by a |
---|
13 | 14 | | group of 15 families from Atascosa County, led by Levi English, with |
---|
14 | 15 | | additional settlers arriving from Goliad two years later; as the |
---|
15 | 16 | | largest and most established community in the area, it was |
---|
16 | 17 | | designated the county seat when Dimmit County was organized in |
---|
17 | 18 | | 1880, and that same year, Mr. English donated a parcel of land for a |
---|
18 | 19 | | townsite; the 1880s brought the construction of homes and key |
---|
19 | 20 | | infrastructure, including the first schoolhouse, which was built by |
---|
20 | 21 | | a local Masonic group, the courthouse, and the establishment of The |
---|
21 | 22 | | Carrizo Springs Javelin newspaper; by the end of the century, the |
---|
22 | 23 | | thriving community was home to churches, grocery stores, a livery |
---|
23 | 24 | | stable, and various other businesses; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, In its early years, the town's economy was driven by |
---|
25 | 26 | | sheep and cattle ranching, but after the discovery of artesian |
---|
26 | 27 | | water as a cost-effective irrigation source, agriculture became the |
---|
27 | 28 | | primary industry, attracting new settlers and increasing land |
---|
28 | 29 | | values; in 1910, the San Antonio, Uvalde and Gulf Railroad opened a |
---|
29 | 30 | | spur into Carrizo Springs, and the community officially |
---|
30 | 31 | | incorporated that year; despite periods of economic downturn, |
---|
31 | 32 | | subsequent decades saw continued growth and infrastructure |
---|
32 | 33 | | improvements, including the paving of the business district in the |
---|
33 | 34 | | late 1920s; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Today, Carrizo Springs has a population of 4,800 and |
---|
35 | 36 | | its economy benefits from the mining, oil and gas, transportation, |
---|
36 | 37 | | and hospitality industries; residents and visitors alike can enjoy |
---|
37 | 38 | | Veterans Park as well as outdoor activities afforded by nearby |
---|
38 | 39 | | lakes and the Nueces River; in addition, the city boasts such |
---|
39 | 40 | | historic landmarks as the Dimmit County Courthouse and First |
---|
40 | 41 | | Baptist Church; and |
---|
41 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to build |

42 | 43 | | an even brighter future, the citizens of Carrizo Springs are |
---|
43 | 44 | | justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to |
---|
44 | 45 | | honor their contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, |
---|
45 | 46 | | therefore, be it |

46 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
47 | 48 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 31, 2025, as Carrizo Springs Day |
---|
48 | 49 | | at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
---|
49 | 50 | | delegation. |
