7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Real County are gathering in |

8 | 9 | | Austin on April 16, 2025, in celebration of Real County Day at the |
---|
9 | 10 | | State Capitol; and |
---|
10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Situated along the Balcones Escarpment on the |
---|
11 | 12 | | southern edge of the Edwards Plateau, this rugged region of |
---|
12 | 13 | | spring-fed streams and scenic canyons was first inhabited by |
---|
13 | 14 | | prehistoric peoples thousands of years ago; in the early 1700s, it |
---|
14 | 15 | | was traversed by the nomadic Lipan Apache and other Native |
---|
15 | 16 | | Americans, who left striking examples of rock art along the |
---|
16 | 17 | | headwaters of the Nueces and Frio Rivers; a Franciscan mission was |
---|
17 | 18 | | established along the Nueces River, and it operated from 1762 to |
---|
18 | 19 | | 1771; and |
---|
19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Anglo American settlers began to arrive in the |
---|
20 | 21 | | 1850s, and in 1857, the U.S. Army set up Camp Wood near the site of |
---|
21 | 22 | | the old mission; after the Civil War, the camp was used by the army |
---|
22 | 23 | | and the Texas Rangers during the years of the last Indian raids; |
---|
23 | 24 | | part of the region was incorporated into Edwards County in 1883, and |
---|
24 | 25 | | in 1913, the Legislature established Real County from portions of |
---|
25 | 26 | | Edwards, Bandera, and Kerr Counties, naming it in honor of Julius |
---|
26 | 27 | | Real, a former Kerr County judge and the only Republican in the |
---|
27 | 28 | | Texas Senate at that time; in its early years, the county's economy |
---|
28 | 29 | | was driven by ranching, especially the raising of sheep and angora |
---|
29 | 30 | | goats, and the Uvalde and Northern Railway helped to encourage |
---|
30 | 31 | | immigration into the area and connect it to national markets; and |
---|
31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Today, Real County is home to more than 2,800 |
---|
32 | 33 | | people, and its economy benefits from the tourism, retail, and |
---|
33 | 34 | | construction industries; notable communities include Camp Wood and |
---|
34 | 35 | | Leakey, the county seat; residents and visitors alike enjoy |
---|
35 | 36 | | recreational opportunities afforded by the Frio and Nueces Rivers, |
---|
36 | 37 | | and outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the area for activities such as |
---|
37 | 38 | | hunting, fishing, bird-watching, and camping; each year, Camp Wood |
---|
38 | 39 | | hosts its Old Settlers Reunion in Lindbergh Park, while the annual |
---|
39 | 40 | | July Jubilee takes place in Leakey; and |
---|
40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Real County is blessed with a rich history and |
---|
41 | 42 | | abundant natural beauty, and its residents may take great pride in |
---|
42 | 43 | | their accomplishments as they continue to work toward an even |
---|
43 | 44 | | brighter future; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
45 | 46 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 16, 2025, as Real County Day at |
---|
46 | 47 | | the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
---|
47 | 48 | | delegation. |
