67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Real County are gathering in
89 Austin on April 16, 2025, in celebration of Real County Day at the
910 State Capitol; and
1011 WHEREAS, Situated along the Balcones Escarpment on the
1112 southern edge of the Edwards Plateau, this rugged region of
1213 spring-fed streams and scenic canyons was first inhabited by
1314 prehistoric peoples thousands of years ago; in the early 1700s, it
1415 was traversed by the nomadic Lipan Apache and other Native
1516 Americans, who left striking examples of rock art along the
1617 headwaters of the Nueces and Frio Rivers; a Franciscan mission was
1718 established along the Nueces River, and it operated from 1762 to
1819 1771; and
1920 WHEREAS, Anglo American settlers began to arrive in the
2021 1850s, and in 1857, the U.S. Army set up Camp Wood near the site of
2122 the old mission; after the Civil War, the camp was used by the army
2223 and the Texas Rangers during the years of the last Indian raids;
2324 part of the region was incorporated into Edwards County in 1883, and
2425 in 1913, the Legislature established Real County from portions of
2526 Edwards, Bandera, and Kerr Counties, naming it in honor of Julius
2627 Real, a former Kerr County judge and the only Republican in the
2728 Texas Senate at that time; in its early years, the county's economy
2829 was driven by ranching, especially the raising of sheep and angora
2930 goats, and the Uvalde and Northern Railway helped to encourage
3031 immigration into the area and connect it to national markets; and
3132 WHEREAS, Today, Real County is home to more than 2,800
3233 people, and its economy benefits from the tourism, retail, and
3334 construction industries; notable communities include Camp Wood and
3435 Leakey, the county seat; residents and visitors alike enjoy
3536 recreational opportunities afforded by the Frio and Nueces Rivers,
3637 and outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the area for activities such as
3738 hunting, fishing, bird-watching, and camping; each year, Camp Wood
3839 hosts its Old Settlers Reunion in Lindbergh Park, while the annual
3940 July Jubilee takes place in Leakey; and
4041 WHEREAS, Real County is blessed with a rich history and
4142 abundant natural beauty, and its residents may take great pride in
4243 their accomplishments as they continue to work toward an even
4344 brighter future; now, therefore, be it
4445 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4546 Legislature hereby recognize April 16, 2025, as Real County Day at
4647 the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting
4748 delegation.
