8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The Daily Texan, the student newspaper of The |
---|
9 | 9 | | University of Texas at Austin, is celebrating its 125th year of |
---|
10 | 10 | | publication in 2025; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, In 1900, two privately owned campus newspapers, the |
---|
12 | 12 | | Calendar and the Ranger, merged to form the weekly Texan; four years |
---|
13 | 13 | | later, the student assembly took on responsibility for operations; |
---|
14 | 14 | | the paper soon began circulating twice a week, and following a 1913 |
---|
15 | 15 | | student referendum, it became what was reportedly the first college |
---|
16 | 16 | | daily in the South; a student-faculty conference in 1921 led to the |
---|
17 | 17 | | formation of Texas Student Publications to publish The Daily Texan, |
---|
18 | 18 | | as well as Longhorn Magazine and the Cactus yearbook; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The Daily Texan established a tradition of editorial |
---|
20 | 20 | | independence early on, opposing the regents' ban on student-owned |
---|
21 | 21 | | cars, publishing a report from an enterprising staffer who hid in a |
---|
22 | 22 | | closet during a closed meeting on the selection of UT's president, |
---|
23 | 23 | | and offending the dean of women with an ad for knee-length "jersey |
---|
24 | 24 | | silk lingerie"; over the years, the paper has taken strong stands on |
---|
25 | 25 | | civil rights, the Vietnam War, censorship, academic freedom, and |
---|
26 | 26 | | other important issues; reporters have produced hard-hitting work |
---|
27 | 27 | | on everything from campus controversies to state government and |
---|
28 | 28 | | have covered such major events as President John F. Kennedy's |
---|
29 | 29 | | assassination, the 1966 mass shooting from the UT Tower, and |
---|
30 | 30 | | generations of student protests; widely admired as one of the |
---|
31 | 31 | | nation's top student papers, The Daily Texan has garnered a host of |
---|
32 | 32 | | prestigious awards; alumni from the sports, features, and editorial |
---|
33 | 33 | | sections, as well as the news side, have gone on to prominence; the |
---|
34 | 34 | | remarkable list includes journalists Walter Cronkite, Bill Moyers, |
---|
35 | 35 | | and Karen Tumulty, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonists Berke |
---|
36 | 36 | | Breathed and Ben Sargent, syndicated columnist Liz Smith, and Wall |
---|
37 | 37 | | Street Journal publisher and international Dow Jones president |

38 | 38 | | Karen Elliott House; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Today, The Daily Texan is the heir to a proud |
---|
40 | 40 | | tradition of student journalism, and its staff may indeed take |

41 | 41 | | great pride in the vital role the paper has played in the UT |
---|
42 | 42 | | community and beyond for over a century; now, therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature hereby congratulate The Daily Texan on its 125th |
---|
45 | 45 | | anniversary and extend to all those associated with the publication |
---|
46 | 46 | | sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
48 | 48 | | prepared for The Daily Texan as an expression of high regard by the |
---|
49 | 49 | | Texas House of Representatives. |
