| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of McMullen County are gathering in |

| 8 | 9 | | Austin to celebrate McMullen County Day at the State Capitol on |

| 9 | 10 | | April 22, 2025; and |

| 10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Located in the center of South Texas, McMullen |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | County is made up of more than 1,000 square miles of flat and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | rolling brushland; artifacts discovered in the county indicate that |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | human settlement may date back as far as 11,000 years, with groups |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | of hunter-gatherers in the area until the 1700s; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Several Spanish expeditions passed through the area |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | in the 17th and 18th centuries, but the population was sparse until |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | shortly before the Civil War, when settlers began to move in to take |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | advantage of the grasslands where wild mustangs and cattle could be |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | found; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The county was established in 1858, and a group of |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | resourceful adventurers settled where the Leoncita Creek flowed |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | into the Rio Frio; the town was first called Rio Frio, then Dog |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | Town, and finally Tilden, after Samuel J. Tilden, the unsuccessful |

| 24 | 25 | | Democratic candidate for president in 1876; the town eventually |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | became the county seat; and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Cattle and sheep ranching have dominated the |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | county's economy, though oil and gas have grown in importance since |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | the 1930s, and the region is also a destination for hunters; and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, McMullen County residents are stewards of an area |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | with a fascinating history and culture, and their unique county |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | indeed merits special recognition; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 22, 2025, as McMullen County Day |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | delegation. |
