67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Curtis King of Dallas was named the recipient of the
89 2025 Outstanding Texan Award for House District 111 by the Texas
910 Legislative Black Caucus; and
1011 WHEREAS, A director and producer, Mr. King founded The Black
1112 Academy of Arts and Letters in 1977; he serves as president of the
1213 acclaimed nonprofit institution, which is headquartered in the Kay
1314 Bailey Hutchison Convention Center; each year, it draws more than
1415 250,000 visitors with its programming, which celebrates the
1516 African, Caribbean, and African American experience through
1617 literature, cinema, and the visual and performing arts; and
1718 WHEREAS, The academy has presented hundreds of productions
1819 over the years, showcasing such stars as Jennifer Holliday, Ruby
1920 Dee, and Dave Chapelle; its youth programs have been an important
2021 incubator for local talent, and its famous alumni include
2122 singer-songwriter Erykah Badu, musician Roy Hargrove, and actor
2223 Regina Taylor; and
2324 WHEREAS, Mr. King has created, directed, and produced a host
2425 of musical tributes, plays, concerts, and other cultural events in
2526 Dallas and around the world; among scores of notable projects, he
2627 wrote and directed Blues Bar, a play that starred Phyllis Hyman,
2728 Billy Preston, and Roger E. Mosley, and he directed Bethune, a
2829 one-woman vehicle for Esther Rolle that toured six cities; in 1993,
2930 he produced a concert commemorating the 30th anniversary of the
3031 March on Washington that featured an array of celebrities, from CBS
3132 Evening News anchor Dan Rather to superstar Eartha Kitt and
3233 comedian Dick Gregory; as part of a U.S. State Department cultural
3334 exchange, he collaborated with writers in Ethiopia and directed
3435 Addia By Night; the recipient of myriad accolades, he won four Lone
3536 Star Region Emmy Awards for The Black Music & Civil Rights Movement
3637 Concert, an annual televised special that aired in partnership with
3738 the Dallas area's CBS affiliate, and he received the African
3839 American Black History Leadership Award from the U.S. Department of
3940 Labor and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National
4041 Association of Dramatic and Speech Arts; and
4142 WHEREAS, Through his outstanding endeavors in advancement of
4243 the arts, Curtis King has enriched the lives of innumerable people,
4344 and he is indeed deserving of this prestigious honor; now,
4445 therefore, be it
4546 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4647 Legislature hereby congratulate Curtis King on his receipt of a
4748 2025 Outstanding Texan Award from the Texas Legislative Black
4849 Caucus and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success;
4950 and, be it further
5051 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5152 prepared for Mr. King as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5253 House of Representatives.
