7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Citizens from Navarro County are gathering in Austin |

8 | 9 | | on March 18, 2025, to celebrate Navarro County Day at the State |
---|
9 | 10 | | Capitol; and |
---|
10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Established with the approval of the state |
---|
11 | 12 | | legislature on April 25, 1846, Navarro County was named after José |
---|
12 | 13 | | Antonio Navarro, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence; |
---|
13 | 14 | | two years later, a 100-acre plot of land was donated for the |
---|
14 | 15 | | creation of a county seat with the name, Corsicana, chosen by |
---|
15 | 16 | | Navarro to honor his father's birthplace on the isle of Corsica; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The community developed as a trading and shipping |
---|
17 | 18 | | center after the completion of the Houston and Texas Central |
---|
18 | 19 | | Railroad in 1871; substantial population growth followed, and an |
---|
19 | 20 | | effort was made to drill for groundwater; this drilling led to the |
---|
20 | 21 | | discovery of oil, and consequently, the first oil boom in the state |
---|
21 | 22 | | of Texas, forever changing the economy and destiny of Navarro |
---|
22 | 23 | | County; more than 200 million barrels of oil have since been pumped |
---|
23 | 24 | | from the county, which claims the longest continuous oil flow in |
---|
24 | 25 | | Texas history; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Today, petroleum, diversified manufacturing, and |
---|
26 | 27 | | agriculture continue to bolster the economy; among the varied crops |
---|
27 | 28 | | grown in the region's fertile black loam are corn, cotton, wheat, |
---|
28 | 29 | | sorghum, and sunflowers, and local ranches raise beef cattle, dairy |
---|
29 | 30 | | cows, and horses; and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Residents of the area benefit from the educational |
---|
31 | 32 | | opportunities provided by Navarro College and the recreational |
---|
32 | 33 | | activities found at Navarro Mills Lake, Lake Halbert, and |
---|
33 | 34 | | Richland-Chambers Reservoir; in addition, the county's fascinating |
---|
34 | 35 | | history is preserved at such attractions as the Pearce Museum and |
---|
35 | 36 | | Pioneer Village; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, The people of Navarro County are working to build a |
---|
37 | 38 | | prosperous future even as they honor the achievements of the past, |
---|
38 | 39 | | and they may take great pride in the unique region they call home; |
---|
39 | 40 | | now, therefore, be it |

40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

41 | 42 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 18, 2025, as Navarro County Day |

42 | 43 | | at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |

43 | 44 | | delegation. |
