67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Wilson County are gathering in
89 Austin on April 15, 2025, to celebrate Wilson County Day at the
910 State Capitol; and
1011 WHEREAS, Situated on the upper coastal plain of South Texas,
1112 Wilson County was initially inhabited by Native Americans of the
1213 Coahuiltecan linguistic family; Spanish explorers traveled through
1314 the area in the early 18th century, and permanent settlement began
1415 some time before 1830; the first Anglo settlers arrived in the late
1516 1840s, and in the following decades, the region attracted a number
1617 of planters from the southern states as well as German and Polish
1718 immigrants from other Texas counties; and
1819 WHEREAS, Wilson County was officially established on
1920 February 13, 1860, and the town of Sutherland Springs was
2021 designated as its first county seat; named for James C. Wilson, a
2122 legislator and member of the Somervell expedition, the county
2223 encompasses sections that were originally part of Bexar and Karnes
2324 Counties; the county seat alternated between Sutherland Springs and
2425 Lodi before a November 1873 election named Floresville as the new
2526 county seat, a decision that is still in effect today; the county's
2627 other communities include Poth, Stockdale, La Vernia, and Pandora;
2728 and
2829 WHEREAS, A significant portion of Wilson County is considered
2930 prime farmland, and the area serves as an important source of
3031 peanuts, hay, sorghum, oats, wheat, corn, watermelons, peaches, and
3132 pecans; the county has also benefited from the ranching industry,
3233 and cattle, dairy, hogs, and poultry have long been major
3334 agricultural products in the region; and
3435 WHEREAS, The people of Wilson County take great pride in
3536 their rich history as they work together to build an even brighter
3637 future, and it is indeed fitting to honor them for their unique
3738 contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
3839 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
3940 Legislature hereby recognize April 15, 2025, as Wilson County Day
4041 at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting
4142 delegation.
