67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, May 9, 2025, marks the second anniversary of the
89 naming of Fort Cavazos in Central Texas; and
910 WHEREAS, Situated between Killeen and Copperas Cove, Fort
1011 Cavazos was previously known as Fort Hood; it was renamed in tribute
1112 to U.S. Army General Richard Edward Cavazos, a sixth-generation
1213 Texan who was the first Latino to serve as a four-star U.S. Army
1314 general and brigadier general; the third-largest U.S. military
1415 base, the installation is home to the III Armored Corps
1516 Headquarters and the 1st Cavalry Division, and it trains and
1617 deploys Army Reserve and National Guard soldiers in support of
1718 global operations; and
1819 WHEREAS, Richard Cavazos was born in Kingsville on
1920 January 31, 1929; following high school, he enrolled in the Army
2021 ROTC program at Texas Technological College; he was commissioned
2122 into the army upon his graduation in 1951, and he served as a first
2223 lieutenant and as the platoon leader of E Company, 2nd Battalion,
2324 65th Infantry Regiment in the Korean War; and
2425 WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Cavazos went on to serve in the
2526 Vietnam War as the commander of the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry
2627 Regiment; in 1973, he was promoted to brigadier general, and over
2728 the next decade, he commanded the 9th Infantry Division and
2829 III Corps in Central Texas; from 1980 to 1982, he served as the III
2930 Corps commanding general, and in his final assignment, he was head
3031 of the U.S. Army Forces Command; he retired in 1984, concluding an
3132 exceptional 33-year military career; he received two Distinguished
3233 Service Cross awards for his heroism in the Korean and Vietnam Wars,
3334 and he was also awarded the Silver Star, two Legion of Merit medals,
3435 five Bronze Star Medals, and the Purple Heart; he died on October
3536 29, 2017, at the age of 88; and
3637 WHEREAS, Fort Cavazos plays an integral role in the defense
3738 of our nation, and it is a pleasure to join in honoring the life and
3839 legacy of its namesake, U.S. Army General Richard Cavazos; now,
3940 therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4142 Legislature hereby commemorate the second anniversary of the
4243 designation of Fort Cavazos and extend to all those associated with
4344 the U.S. Army post sincere best wishes for continued success with
4445 their important mission; and, be it further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for Fort Cavazos as an expression of high regard by the
4748 Texas House of Representatives.
