7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The 95th birthday of Dolores Huerta on April 10, |

8 | 8 | | 2025, provides a fitting opportunity to celebrate the life of one of |
---|
9 | 9 | | the most influential labor leaders of our era; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Born in 1930, Ms. Huerta has distinguished herself |
---|
11 | 11 | | as a dedicated activist for civil and labor rights; in 1955, she |
---|
12 | 12 | | cofounded the Stockton, California, chapter of the Community |
---|
13 | 13 | | Services Organization, a grassroots group dedicated to ending |
---|
14 | 14 | | segregation, discrimination, and police brutality while improving |
---|
15 | 15 | | social and economic conditions for farmworkers; she then launched |
---|
16 | 16 | | the Agricultural Workers Association and joined forces with Cesar |
---|
17 | 17 | | Chavez in 1962 to establish the National Farm Workers Association; |
---|
18 | 18 | | three years later, the AWA and NFWA merged to become the United Farm |
---|
19 | 19 | | Workers; her skill as an organizer and negotiator proved key in the |
---|
20 | 20 | | grape workers' strike that lasted from 1965 to 1970 and ended with a |
---|
21 | 21 | | historic agreement that brought unemployment and health care |
---|
22 | 22 | | benefits and reduced the use of dangerous pesticides; and |

23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Huerta went on to galvanize national attention |
---|
24 | 24 | | with the lettuce boycott, paving the way for the Agricultural Labor |
---|
25 | 25 | | Relations Act of 1975, the first law to recognize collective |
---|
26 | 26 | | bargaining rights for farmworkers; in subsequent decades, she |
---|
27 | 27 | | served as UFW vice president and advocated powerfully for such |
---|
28 | 28 | | causes as comprehensive immigration reform, women's rights, and |
---|
29 | 29 | | greater representation of Latinos and women in public office; since |
---|
30 | 30 | | stepping down as vice president in 1999, she has continued her vital |
---|
31 | 31 | | endeavors by focusing on a range of issues, including income |
---|
32 | 32 | | inequality; and |

33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Widely admired for her contributions, Ms. Huerta was |

34 | 34 | | inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1993, and she was |
---|
35 | 35 | | presented with the Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights in |
---|
36 | 36 | | 1998; her receipt of the $100,000 Puffin/Nation Prize for Creative |

37 | 37 | | Citizenship in 2002 allowed her to create the Dolores Huerta |
---|
38 | 38 | | Foundation, which helps individuals in low-income communities to |

39 | 39 | | build organizing and training skills; and |

40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of a remarkable life spanning nine |
---|
41 | 41 | | and a half decades, Dolores Huerta has championed the ideals of |
---|
42 | 42 | | equality and justice, and she may reflect with pride on her |
---|
43 | 43 | | wide-ranging accomplishments and on the many significant |
---|
44 | 44 | | contributions she has made in behalf of her fellow citizens; now, |

45 | 45 | | therefore, be it |

46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

47 | 47 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dolores Huerta on the joyous |

48 | 48 | | occasion of her 95th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes |

49 | 49 | | for continued happiness; and, be it further |
