77 R E S O L U T I O N
88 WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and
99 meaningful accomplishments remain to comfort the family and friends
1010 of Roy Leonard Grant Sr. of Houston, who passed away on March 30,
1111 2025, at the age of 85; and
1212 WHEREAS, Born in Chester on September 20, 1939, to Ezell
1313 Grant and Doris Wells, Roy Grant grew up with the companionship of
1414 two sisters, Gloria and Nelvia; he graduated from Chester High
1515 School, and he went on to enlist in the U.S. Army in 1969 and to
1616 complete a tour of duty in Germany; after concluding his military
1717 service, he worked as a pipefitter at the Goodyear Chemical plant
1818 for 35 years before retiring; and
1919 WHEREAS, In 1963, Mr. Grant exchanged vows with the love of
2020 his life, Bobbie Jean Grant, and the couple shared a rewarding
2121 marriage that spanned 54 years until her passing in 2017; Mr. Grant
2222 took great pride in his daughters, Cynthia, Barbara, and Bridgette,
2323 and his sons, Roy and Ira; with the passing years, he saw his
2424 treasured family grow to include 23 grandchildren and 36
2525 great-grandchildren; and
2626 WHEREAS, Mr. Grant was involved in numerous organizations in
2727 Northeast Houston; his volunteer efforts included service as a
2828 member of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform
2929 Now, as the commissioner of the East Houston Athletic Club, as
3030 president of Smokey Jasper Park, and as a board member for the East
3131 Houston Civic Club and the Lakewood Park Advisory Committee; his
3232 interest in civic affairs was also reflected in his work with State
3333 Representative Senfronia Thompson, U.S. Representative Sheila
3434 Jackson Lee, and other elected officials; and
3535 WHEREAS, Those fortunate enough to have known Roy Grant will
3636 forever remember his kindness, his leadership, and his service to
3737 his community, and his legacy will continue to be appreciated for
3838 many years to come; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4040 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Roy Leonard Grant
4141 Sr. and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to
4242 his daughters, Cynthia Grant and her husband, Clifford, Barbara
4343 Grant, and Bridgette Grant and her husband, Johnny; to his sons, Roy
4444 Leonard Grant Jr. and his wife, Placiel, and Ira Grant and his wife,
4545 Shanquetta; to his stepson, Willie Meeks, and his wife, Michelle;
4646 to his sister, Nelvia Jean Reese; to his grandchildren and
4747 great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives and many friends;
4848 and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5151 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Roy Grant.
