8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of the city of Donna are gathering |
---|
9 | 9 | | in Austin on April 10, 2025, to celebrate Donna Day at the State |
---|
10 | 10 | | Capitol; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Situated in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley, |
---|
12 | 12 | | Donna is located on land that was bequeathed to Lino Cabazos by the |
---|
13 | 13 | | Mexican state of Tamaulipas in 1834, and members of the Cabazos |
---|
14 | 14 | | family continued to live in the area over the ensuing decades; |
---|
15 | 15 | | settlers from northern states began arriving at the turn of the 20th |
---|
16 | 16 | | century; among them was Thomas Jefferson Hooks, who helped found |
---|
17 | 17 | | the La Blanca Agricultural Company, which purchased 23,000 acres of |
---|
18 | 18 | | land, and the town was founded in 1904; three years later, the |
---|
19 | 19 | | community was named in honor of Donna Hooks Fletcher, the daughter |
---|
20 | 20 | | of Mr. Hooks; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Donna was incorporated in 1908, the same year that |
---|
22 | 22 | | its post office was established and its first store and sugar mill |
---|
23 | 23 | | were constructed; by 1915, the town had a population of 1,500 |
---|
24 | 24 | | residents, and in the decades that followed, it continued to |
---|
25 | 25 | | develop into a major hub for vegetable and citrus crops; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Today, Donna is home to more than 16,000 people, and |
---|
27 | 27 | | its economy is bolstered by the retail, educational services, and |
---|
28 | 28 | | tourism industries in addition to agriculture; area youth benefit |
---|
29 | 29 | | from the award-winning Donna Independent School District, which |
---|
30 | 30 | | provides its students with the academic opportunities necessary to |
---|
31 | 31 | | build a strong foundation for future success; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Donna is connected to Río Bravo, Tamaulipas, by an |
---|
33 | 33 | | international bridge, which receives an average of 60,000 crossings |
---|
34 | 34 | | a month; its location in a relatively uncongested portion of the |
---|
35 | 35 | | border allows for efficient travel to and from Mexico, and |
---|
36 | 36 | | officials are pursuing further improvements to the port of entry to |
---|
37 | 37 | | facilitate transportation and trade; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Donna have made many valuable |
---|
39 | 39 | | contributions to the culture and economy of Texas, and they take |
---|
40 | 40 | | justifiable pride in the rich heritage and unique amenities that |
---|
41 | 41 | | make their city such a notable part of the Lone Star State; now, |
---|
42 | 42 | | therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 10, 2025, as Donna Day at the |
---|
45 | 45 | | State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting delegation. |
