77 R E S O L U T I O N
88 WHEREAS, Proud residents of the city of Donna are gathering
99 in Austin on April 10, 2025, to celebrate Donna Day at the State
1010 Capitol; and
1111 WHEREAS, Situated in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley,
1212 Donna is located on land that was bequeathed to Lino Cabazos by the
1313 Mexican state of Tamaulipas in 1834, and members of the Cabazos
1414 family continued to live in the area over the ensuing decades;
1515 settlers from northern states began arriving at the turn of the 20th
1616 century; among them was Thomas Jefferson Hooks, who helped found
1717 the La Blanca Agricultural Company, which purchased 23,000 acres of
1818 land, and the town was founded in 1904; three years later, the
1919 community was named in honor of Donna Hooks Fletcher, the daughter
2020 of Mr. Hooks; and
2121 WHEREAS, Donna was incorporated in 1908, the same year that
2222 its post office was established and its first store and sugar mill
2323 were constructed; by 1915, the town had a population of 1,500
2424 residents, and in the decades that followed, it continued to
2525 develop into a major hub for vegetable and citrus crops; and
2626 WHEREAS, Today, Donna is home to more than 16,000 people, and
2727 its economy is bolstered by the retail, educational services, and
2828 tourism industries in addition to agriculture; area youth benefit
2929 from the award-winning Donna Independent School District, which
3030 provides its students with the academic opportunities necessary to
3131 build a strong foundation for future success; and
3232 WHEREAS, Donna is connected to Río Bravo, Tamaulipas, by an
3333 international bridge, which receives an average of 60,000 crossings
3434 a month; its location in a relatively uncongested portion of the
3535 border allows for efficient travel to and from Mexico, and
3636 officials are pursuing further improvements to the port of entry to
3737 facilitate transportation and trade; and
3838 WHEREAS, The citizens of Donna have made many valuable
3939 contributions to the culture and economy of Texas, and they take
4040 justifiable pride in the rich heritage and unique amenities that
4141 make their city such a notable part of the Lone Star State; now,
4242 therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4444 Legislature hereby recognize April 10, 2025, as Donna Day at the
4545 State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting delegation.
