9 | 9 | | and human rights drew to a close with the passing of Daniel Chris |

10 | 10 | | Graney of San Antonio on July 11, 2024, at the age of 75; and |

11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Born on May 16, 1949, in Norfolk, Nebraska, Dan |

12 | 12 | | Graney spent part of his youth in foster care before being adopted |
---|
13 | 13 | | by a Lutheran minister and his wife at age 18; after graduating from |
---|
14 | 14 | | St. John's College in Winfield, Kansas, he received his |
---|
15 | 15 | | undergraduate degree from Concordia Senior College in Fort Wayne, |
---|
16 | 16 | | Indiana, and his master of divinity degree from Christ |
---|
17 | 17 | | Seminary-Seminex; ordained as a Lutheran minister, he began his |
---|
18 | 18 | | clerical career serving San Francisco's Mission District Hispanic |
---|
19 | 19 | | community; and |

20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, While undertaking his ministerial studies, |

21 | 21 | | Mr. Graney met his first love, a Franciscan priest named Roberto |

22 | 22 | | Flores; in 1977, the pair moved to Houston, where Mr. Graney served |
---|
23 | 23 | | as a minister and paralegal for undocumented immigrants; he was |
---|
24 | 24 | | elected as a bishop of the Texas Province of the Southwest Regional |
---|
25 | 25 | | Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, but he was forced to resign |
---|
26 | 26 | | after church officials learned about his relationship; pivoting to |
---|
27 | 27 | | a career in law, he graduated as valedictorian of his class at Texas |
---|
28 | 28 | | Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law in 1987, and |
---|
29 | 29 | | he went on to relocate his practice, which primarily focused on |
---|
30 | 30 | | immigration law, to San Antonio in 1992; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Graney and Mr. Flores shared 35 years together |
---|
32 | 32 | | before they were able to legally marry in Vermont on October 15, |
---|
33 | 33 | | 2009; after Mr. Flores passed away, Mr. Graney was fortunate enough |
---|
34 | 34 | | to find love again, and on June 9, 2017, he wed Rolando Jaimes |
---|
35 | 35 | | Mesco, who served as his devoted caregiver throughout his medical |
---|
36 | 36 | | challenges; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Despite retiring from his work as an attorney due to |
---|
38 | 38 | | health issues in 1993, Mr. Graney continued to make an impact |
---|
39 | 39 | | through his involvement with San Antonio's LGBT community; he |
---|
40 | 40 | | served as cofounder of the Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio, as |
---|
41 | 41 | | chair of the Bexar County Democratic Party, and as president of the |
---|
42 | 42 | | Stonewall Democratic Caucus for the 2008 Texas Democratic Party |
---|
43 | 43 | | Convention; additionally, as co-chair of the Community Alliance for |
---|
44 | 44 | | a United San Antonio, he helped secure the historic passage of a |
---|
45 | 45 | | citywide nondiscrimination ordinance in 2013; and |
---|
46 | 46 | | WHEREAS, Dan Graney touched countless lives through his |
---|
47 | 47 | | selfless service and his unwavering commitment to the rights of the |
---|
48 | 48 | | marginalized, and he leaves behind a legacy that will long be |
---|
49 | 49 | | remembered; now, therefore, be it |
---|
50 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
51 | 51 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Daniel Chris Graney |
---|
52 | 52 | | and extend deepest condolences to all those who mourn his passing; |
---|
53 | 53 | | and, be it further |
---|
54 | 54 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
55 | 55 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
56 | 56 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dan Graney. |
