67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Victoria College is celebrating its 100th
89 anniversary in 2025; and
910 WHEREAS, In February 1925, the trustees of the Victoria
1011 Independent School District voted to establish Victoria Junior
1112 College as an extension of Patti Welder High School; fifty-one
1213 students began attending classes on the third floor of the school
1314 that September; later, a college annex was added to the building;
1415 and
1516 WHEREAS, The college moved to its present-day site on Red
1617 River Street in 1949 under an independent board of trustees and a
1718 new name, the Victoria College; facilities included an
1819 administration building with classrooms, a library, a gymnasium, a
1920 student union, an athletic dormitory, and home economics and
2021 industrial arts buildings; between 1958 and 1975, the size of the
2122 campus doubled and many new facilities were completed, among them
2223 an auditorium, a field house, and science, health, and fine arts
2324 buildings; and
2425 WHEREAS, Through the years, Victoria College expanded its
2526 adult education, workforce training, and dual enrollment
2627 offerings; the institution now serves more than 7,000 students
2728 annually; the 60-acre Main Campus has 16 buildings, and the college
2829 also operates the Zelda L. Allen School of Nursing in
2930 Hallettsville, the Museum of the Coastal Bend, the Gonzales Center,
3031 the Leo J. Welder Center for the Performing Arts, the Liberty Street
3132 Industrial Training Center, and the Emerging Technology Complex;
3233 construction of the new Student Success Center is scheduled for
3334 completion by the end of 2025; and
3435 WHEREAS, Victoria College is committed to providing a
3536 high-quality education while maintaining costs at a third of the
3637 average state university; numerous programs lead to high-demand
3738 careers in such fields as industrial trade, business, public
3839 service, technology, and health care; the administration is guided
3940 by the motto "Our Community, Our College: Improving Lives,
4041 Strengthening Communities," and 70 percent of graduates continue to
4142 live and work in the service area; and
4243 WHEREAS, Since its inception, Victoria College has been a
4344 catalyst for educational attainment, economic growth, and cultural
4445 enrichment, and this milestone in its history provides a welcome
4546 opportunity to celebrate its contributions to the prosperity and
4647 vibrancy of the community; now, therefore, be it
4748 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4849 Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of Victoria
4950 College and extend to all those associated with the institution
5051 sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
5152 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5253 prepared for the college as an expression of high regard by the
5354 Texas House of Representatives.
