8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Mission lost an admired civic leader |
---|
9 | 9 | | and a friend to many with the passing of Benjamin Cavazos on |

10 | 10 | | March 8, 2025, at the age of 94; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The son of Poulina Sepulveda, Ben Cavazos was born |
---|
12 | 12 | | in Sharyland on May 5, 1930; he graduated from Sharyland High School |
---|
13 | 13 | | and received specialized training in the U.S. Army; after working |
---|
14 | 14 | | for Cameron Electric in McAllen, he cofounded Mission Auto |
---|
15 | 15 | | Electric, and he soon bought out his partner; the company |
---|
16 | 16 | | flourished, becoming MAE Power Equipment on its 50th anniversary in |
---|
17 | 17 | | 2004; over the years, Mr. Cavazos mentored countless employees, as |
---|
18 | 18 | | well as customers who started lawn care businesses, and he was |
---|
19 | 19 | | founder and charter president of the Texas Service Dealers |
---|
20 | 20 | | Organization; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, In 1965, Mr. Cavazos joined the Mission Chamber of |
---|
22 | 22 | | Commerce, and today, MAE Power Equipment is its longest-tenured |
---|
23 | 23 | | member; he was also a founder of the Citrus Cavaliers, who served as |
---|
24 | 24 | | city ambassadors with the chamber; during more than a half century |
---|
25 | 25 | | with the Mission Kiwanis Club, he was its announcer for the Texas |
---|
26 | 26 | | Citrus Fiesta Parade and served several terms as president; in |
---|
27 | 27 | | addition, he was a member of the Mission Jaycees, and he served on |
---|
28 | 28 | | the Mission hospital board for almost two decades; as a parishioner |
---|
29 | 29 | | of Saint Paul Catholic Church, he was active in the Cursillo |
---|
30 | 30 | | Movement and the men's group; he received myriad accolades for his |
---|
31 | 31 | | contributions, including selection as the 1980 City of Mission Man |
---|
32 | 32 | | of the Year, as the 1984 Mr. Mission, and as the 2019 Business |
---|
33 | 33 | | Leader of the Year by the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cavazos and his first wife, Margarita Cuevas, |
---|
35 | 35 | | became the proud parents of three children, Benjamin, Joe, and |
---|
36 | 36 | | Teresa; following the amicable end of their union, he was fortunate |
---|
37 | 37 | | enough to find love a second time, and he married Rita Cavazos in |
---|
38 | 38 | | 1968; they were blessed with two children, Martha and Oscar; |
---|
39 | 39 | | Mr. Cavazos loved family road trips and always brought home |
---|
40 | 40 | | wonderful stories, and he considered any occasion a good reason for |
---|
41 | 41 | | a party; and |
---|
42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Ben Cavazos gave freely of his time and talents to |
---|
43 | 43 | | benefit his community, and although he is deeply missed by those he |
---|
44 | 44 | | has left behind, they will forever treasure their memories of his |
---|
45 | 45 | | wisdom, kindness, and geniality; now, therefore, be it |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
47 | 47 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Benjamin Cavazos and |
---|
48 | 48 | | extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his |
---|
49 | 49 | | children, Benjamin Lee Cavazos, Joe Hector Cavazos, Teresa |
---|
50 | 50 | | Bourbois, Martha Claudia Cavazos Fipps, and Oscar Antonio Cavazos, |
---|
51 | 51 | | and their spouses; to his 12 grandchildren and 13 |
---|
52 | 52 | | great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives and friends; and, |

53 | 53 | | be it further |

54 | 54 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

55 | 55 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |

56 | 56 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ben |
