8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The Barrett Station Civic League is celebrating 150 |
---|
9 | 9 | | years of family and community at its Founders Day event on June 14, |
---|
10 | 10 | | 2025; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The namesake of Barrett Station, Harrison Barrett |
---|
12 | 12 | | was born in Texas around 1845 to Simon and Eliza Barrett; his |
---|
13 | 13 | | parents, who came from Louisiana, had several other children, but |
---|
14 | 14 | | during slavery, family members were separated; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Immediately after emancipation in 1865, Harrison |
---|
16 | 16 | | Barrett and his wife, Annie Jones Barrett, made a 30-mile trek to |
---|
17 | 17 | | Houston to have a justice of the peace legally formalize their |
---|
18 | 18 | | marriage; he spent several years finding his relatives and |
---|
19 | 19 | | reuniting them on land east of the San Jacinto River; cutting down |
---|
20 | 20 | | lumber on his property, he helped his family build seven houses and |
---|
21 | 21 | | start farms; he and his wife were blessed with 12 children; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Barrett established a sawmill, gristmill, and |
---|
23 | 23 | | coffee mill, and he granted open access to the fish and crawfish in |
---|
24 | 24 | | the spring and gully near his homestead; in 1889, the White owner of |
---|
25 | 25 | | the land finally agreed to sell it to him for 50 cents an acre; |
---|
26 | 26 | | Barrett's Settlement was one of the largest properties to be |
---|
27 | 27 | | acquired by a freedman in Harris County; as the community grew, |
---|
28 | 28 | | Mr. Barrett donated land for Shiloh Baptist Church, which also |
---|
29 | 29 | | served as a school; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In 1917, Mr. Barrett passed away; he, his wife, and |
---|
31 | 31 | | four other family members are interred in the Journey's End |
---|
32 | 32 | | Cemetery near his original homestead; twice rebuilt by descendants, |
---|
33 | 33 | | the house still stands today; when the community gained a post |
---|
34 | 34 | | office substation in 1947, it became known as Barrett Station; the |
---|
35 | 35 | | civic league was established in 1954, and it continues to promote |
---|
36 | 36 | | community engagement and the well-being of local citizens, who now |
---|
37 | 37 | | number more than 4,000; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, The founder of Barrett Station inspired generations |
---|
39 | 39 | | through his resilience, determination, and deep commitment to his |
---|
40 | 40 | | loved ones, and it is truly a pleasure to join in marking this |
---|
41 | 41 | | milestone of his family's rich history; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 2025 Founders Day celebration of |
---|
44 | 44 | | the Barrett Station Civic League and extend sincere best wishes to |
---|
45 | 45 | | all those participating in this sesquicentennial event; and, be it |
---|
46 | 46 | | further |

47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

48 | 48 | | prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the |
---|
