77 R E S O L U T I O N
88 WHEREAS, The Barrett Station Civic League is celebrating 150
99 years of family and community at its Founders Day event on June 14,
1010 2025; and
1111 WHEREAS, The namesake of Barrett Station, Harrison Barrett
1212 was born in Texas around 1845 to Simon and Eliza Barrett; his
1313 parents, who came from Louisiana, had several other children, but
1414 during slavery, family members were separated; and
1515 WHEREAS, Immediately after emancipation in 1865, Harrison
1616 Barrett and his wife, Annie Jones Barrett, made a 30-mile trek to
1717 Houston to have a justice of the peace legally formalize their
1818 marriage; he spent several years finding his relatives and
1919 reuniting them on land east of the San Jacinto River; cutting down
2020 lumber on his property, he helped his family build seven houses and
2121 start farms; he and his wife were blessed with 12 children; and
2222 WHEREAS, Mr. Barrett established a sawmill, gristmill, and
2323 coffee mill, and he granted open access to the fish and crawfish in
2424 the spring and gully near his homestead; in 1889, the White owner of
2525 the land finally agreed to sell it to him for 50 cents an acre;
2626 Barrett's Settlement was one of the largest properties to be
2727 acquired by a freedman in Harris County; as the community grew,
2828 Mr. Barrett donated land for Shiloh Baptist Church, which also
2929 served as a school; and
3030 WHEREAS, In 1917, Mr. Barrett passed away; he, his wife, and
3131 four other family members are interred in the Journey's End
3232 Cemetery near his original homestead; twice rebuilt by descendants,
3333 the house still stands today; when the community gained a post
3434 office substation in 1947, it became known as Barrett Station; the
3535 civic league was established in 1954, and it continues to promote
3636 community engagement and the well-being of local citizens, who now
3737 number more than 4,000; and
3838 WHEREAS, The founder of Barrett Station inspired generations
3939 through his resilience, determination, and deep commitment to his
4040 loved ones, and it is truly a pleasure to join in marking this
4141 milestone of his family's rich history; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4343 Legislature hereby commemorate the 2025 Founders Day celebration of
4444 the Barrett Station Civic League and extend sincere best wishes to
4545 all those participating in this sesquicentennial event; and, be it
4646 further
4747 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4848 prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the
4949 Texas House of Representatives.
