77 R E S O L U T I O N
88 WHEREAS, Proud residents are joining together to celebrate
99 Austin County Day at the State Capitol on April 24, 2025; and
1010 WHEREAS, Located between the Post Oak Savannah and the
1111 Coastal Prairie regions, Austin County was one of the first
1212 Anglo-American colonies created in the 1820s; the county gets its
1313 name from Stephen F. Austin, who not only founded the colonies in
1414 this area but also had unprecedented influence on Texas history;
1515 known as the Father of Texas, Stephen F. Austin served as an
1616 empresario and provided land grants to the Old Three Hundred, who
1717 were the first families to settle in the colony that now includes
1818 modern-day Austin County; and
1919 WHEREAS, San Felipe de Austin was one of the first towns
2020 founded in the colony and was named in honor of Saint Stephen and
2121 Stephen F. Austin; in 1824, the General Land Office opened in
2222 San Felipe de Austin, which served as the capital of the
2323 Anglo-American settlements in Texas; furthermore, the town hosted
2424 the Conventions of 1832 and 1833 prior to the Texas Revolution;
2525 Austin County was officially created by the Constitution of 1836,
2626 with San Felipe serving as the county seat until 1848, when the
2727 county government moved to the community of Bellville; and
2828 WHEREAS, Austin County experienced multiple waves of
2929 settlement, with Anglo-Americans arriving first to Austin's colony
3030 and settling on the fertile land around the Brazos River and its
3131 tributaries; eventually, Germans and Czechs settled the land,
3232 leading to the development of many towns including Bellville,
3333 Wallis, Sealy, and Industry; these cultural influences are felt
3434 throughout the communities, with enrichments from Mexican
3535 immigrants, the largest foreign-born group to settle in Austin
3636 County in the 20th century; other influences came from African
3737 Americans, who further contributed to the county's development and
3838 the creation of many religious and social institutions; and
3939 WHEREAS, Austin County has fostered an environment where
4040 publications have flourished, like the Texas Gazette and the Texas
4141 Register; the Texas Gazette was created by Godwin Brown Cotton in
4242 1829 at San Felipe and was the first newspaper in the State of
4343 Texas; the Texas Register also started in Austin County at
4444 San Felipe in 1835 and eventually became the official voice of the
4545 government of the Republic of Texas; and
4646 WHEREAS, Austin County also was the founding place of the
4747 Texas postal system and the Committee of Safety in San Felipe; the
4848 latter would defend Anglo-Americans from Indian tribes and would
4949 eventually become the Texas Rangers; and
5050 WHEREAS, Today, Austin County has flourished into a
5151 successful county where its economy thrives as a hub for
5252 transportation, agribusiness, tourism, and manufacturing; many
5353 towns have prospered in this county, including Cat Spring, Shelby,
5454 New Ulm, and Frydek, and it now has a total population of over
5555 31,000 residents; and
5656 WHEREAS, Honoring their history as they embrace the
5757 opportunities of the future, the citizens of Austin County may
5858 indeed take great pride in their unique contributions to the story
5959 of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
6060 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
6161 Legislature hereby recognize April 24, 2025, as Austin County Day
6262 at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting
6363 delegation.
