8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents are joining together to celebrate |

9 | 9 | | Austin County Day at the State Capitol on April 24, 2025; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Located between the Post Oak Savannah and the |
---|
11 | 11 | | Coastal Prairie regions, Austin County was one of the first |
---|
12 | 12 | | Anglo-American colonies created in the 1820s; the county gets its |
---|
13 | 13 | | name from Stephen F. Austin, who not only founded the colonies in |
---|
14 | 14 | | this area but also had unprecedented influence on Texas history; |
---|
15 | 15 | | known as the Father of Texas, Stephen F. Austin served as an |
---|
16 | 16 | | empresario and provided land grants to the Old Three Hundred, who |
---|
17 | 17 | | were the first families to settle in the colony that now includes |
---|
18 | 18 | | modern-day Austin County; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, San Felipe de Austin was one of the first towns |
---|
20 | 20 | | founded in the colony and was named in honor of Saint Stephen and |
---|
21 | 21 | | Stephen F. Austin; in 1824, the General Land Office opened in |
---|
22 | 22 | | San Felipe de Austin, which served as the capital of the |
---|
23 | 23 | | Anglo-American settlements in Texas; furthermore, the town hosted |
---|
24 | 24 | | the Conventions of 1832 and 1833 prior to the Texas Revolution; |
---|
25 | 25 | | Austin County was officially created by the Constitution of 1836, |
---|
26 | 26 | | with San Felipe serving as the county seat until 1848, when the |
---|
27 | 27 | | county government moved to the community of Bellville; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Austin County experienced multiple waves of |
---|
29 | 29 | | settlement, with Anglo-Americans arriving first to Austin's colony |
---|
30 | 30 | | and settling on the fertile land around the Brazos River and its |
---|
31 | 31 | | tributaries; eventually, Germans and Czechs settled the land, |
---|
32 | 32 | | leading to the development of many towns including Bellville, |
---|
33 | 33 | | Wallis, Sealy, and Industry; these cultural influences are felt |
---|
34 | 34 | | throughout the communities, with enrichments from Mexican |
---|
35 | 35 | | immigrants, the largest foreign-born group to settle in Austin |
---|
36 | 36 | | County in the 20th century; other influences came from African |
---|
37 | 37 | | Americans, who further contributed to the county's development and |
---|
38 | 38 | | the creation of many religious and social institutions; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Austin County has fostered an environment where |
---|
40 | 40 | | publications have flourished, like the Texas Gazette and the Texas |
---|
41 | 41 | | Register; the Texas Gazette was created by Godwin Brown Cotton in |
---|
42 | 42 | | 1829 at San Felipe and was the first newspaper in the State of |
---|
43 | 43 | | Texas; the Texas Register also started in Austin County at |
---|
44 | 44 | | San Felipe in 1835 and eventually became the official voice of the |
---|
45 | 45 | | government of the Republic of Texas; and |
---|
46 | 46 | | WHEREAS, Austin County also was the founding place of the |
---|
47 | 47 | | Texas postal system and the Committee of Safety in San Felipe; the |
---|
48 | 48 | | latter would defend Anglo-Americans from Indian tribes and would |
---|
49 | 49 | | eventually become the Texas Rangers; and |
---|
50 | 50 | | WHEREAS, Today, Austin County has flourished into a |
---|
51 | 51 | | successful county where its economy thrives as a hub for |
---|
52 | 52 | | transportation, agribusiness, tourism, and manufacturing; many |
---|
53 | 53 | | towns have prospered in this county, including Cat Spring, Shelby, |
---|
54 | 54 | | New Ulm, and Frydek, and it now has a total population of over |
---|
55 | 55 | | 31,000 residents; and |
---|
56 | 56 | | WHEREAS, Honoring their history as they embrace the |
---|
57 | 57 | | opportunities of the future, the citizens of Austin County may |
---|
58 | 58 | | indeed take great pride in their unique contributions to the story |
---|
59 | 59 | | of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
60 | 60 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
61 | 61 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 24, 2025, as Austin County Day |
---|
62 | 62 | | at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
---|
63 | 63 | | delegation. |
