77 R E S O L U T I O N
88 WHEREAS, Students and alumni of Texas A&M University are
99 taking part in one of the university's most cherished traditions,
1010 Aggie Muster, on April 21, 2025; and
1111 WHEREAS, Muster traces its origins to San Jacinto Day, which
1212 commemorates the defeat of the Mexican Army by the Republic of Texas
1313 at the Battle of San Jacinto; the first Muster took place on
1414 June 26, 1883, when a group of former Texas A&M students gathered
1515 together to reminisce about their days in college; and
1616 WHEREAS, During the first half of the 20th century, the
1717 tradition of Muster evolved to include a memoriam for those who were
1818 absent; during both World War I and World War II, Aggies met and
1919 forged bonds at army posts across the United States and in the
2020 trenches in Europe; during the most famous Aggie Muster that took
2121 place on the small island of Corregidor in the Philippines in 1942,
2222 Major General George Moore led a group of recently commissioned
2323 Aggies in holding a yell practice, singing the War Hymn, and
2424 honoring the memory of Aggies who had died; and
2525 WHEREAS, The first campus Muster was organized in 1924, and
2626 it has since grown into an all-day affair that includes a ceremonial
2727 barbecue with members of the 50-year reunion class and a special
2828 memorial service at Reed Arena; at every Muster, a speaker
2929 addresses the crowd present before the "Roll Call for the Absent,"
3030 during which the names of those from that area who have died in the
3131 past year are read; as each name is called, a family member or
3232 friend responds with "Here" to express that the deceased individual
3333 is present in spirit, and a candle is subsequently lit in his or her
3434 memory; and
3535 WHEREAS, Muster is a time of both solemnity and celebration
3636 for members of the worldwide Aggie community, who unite with one
3737 another in solidarity and remembrance of those they have lost, and
3838 participants in this year's Muster are helping to perpetuate a
3939 tradition that is inextricably tied to the history and culture of
4040 their alma mater; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4242 Legislature hereby commemorate Aggie Muster on April 21, 2025, and
4343 extend to all those taking part in this year's Muster sincere best
4444 wishes for a meaningful and memorable event.
