8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Students and alumni of Texas A&M University are |
---|
9 | 9 | | taking part in one of the university's most cherished traditions, |
---|
10 | 10 | | Aggie Muster, on April 21, 2025; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Muster traces its origins to San Jacinto Day, which |
---|
12 | 12 | | commemorates the defeat of the Mexican Army by the Republic of Texas |
---|
13 | 13 | | at the Battle of San Jacinto; the first Muster took place on |
---|
14 | 14 | | June 26, 1883, when a group of former Texas A&M students gathered |
---|
15 | 15 | | together to reminisce about their days in college; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, During the first half of the 20th century, the |
---|
17 | 17 | | tradition of Muster evolved to include a memoriam for those who were |
---|
18 | 18 | | absent; during both World War I and World War II, Aggies met and |
---|
19 | 19 | | forged bonds at army posts across the United States and in the |
---|
20 | 20 | | trenches in Europe; during the most famous Aggie Muster that took |
---|
21 | 21 | | place on the small island of Corregidor in the Philippines in 1942, |
---|
22 | 22 | | Major General George Moore led a group of recently commissioned |
---|
23 | 23 | | Aggies in holding a yell practice, singing the War Hymn, and |
---|
24 | 24 | | honoring the memory of Aggies who had died; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The first campus Muster was organized in 1924, and |
---|
26 | 26 | | it has since grown into an all-day affair that includes a ceremonial |
---|
27 | 27 | | barbecue with members of the 50-year reunion class and a special |
---|
28 | 28 | | memorial service at Reed Arena; at every Muster, a speaker |
---|
29 | 29 | | addresses the crowd present before the "Roll Call for the Absent," |
---|
30 | 30 | | during which the names of those from that area who have died in the |
---|
31 | 31 | | past year are read; as each name is called, a family member or |
---|
32 | 32 | | friend responds with "Here" to express that the deceased individual |
---|
33 | 33 | | is present in spirit, and a candle is subsequently lit in his or her |
---|
34 | 34 | | memory; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Muster is a time of both solemnity and celebration |
---|
36 | 36 | | for members of the worldwide Aggie community, who unite with one |
---|
37 | 37 | | another in solidarity and remembrance of those they have lost, and |
---|
38 | 38 | | participants in this year's Muster are helping to perpetuate a |
---|
39 | 39 | | tradition that is inextricably tied to the history and culture of |
---|
40 | 40 | | their alma mater; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature hereby commemorate Aggie Muster on April 21, 2025, and |
---|
43 | 43 | | extend to all those taking part in this year's Muster sincere best |
---|
44 | 44 | | wishes for a meaningful and memorable event. |
