8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Jeannette Valdez Duran has rendered invaluable |

9 | 9 | | service to the citizens of Austin through her work at the helm of |

10 | 10 | | Mobile Blessings from the Heart; and |

11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed organization traces its origins to the |

12 | 12 | | period between 2006 and 2009, when Ms. Duran was living on the |
---|
13 | 13 | | streets of North Austin; she struggled to find enough food to eat, |
---|
14 | 14 | | and one night, she summoned up the courage to ask the manager of a |
---|
15 | 15 | | convenience store for the day's leftovers; his kindness inspired |
---|
16 | 16 | | her to change the trajectory of her life, and what began with the |
---|
17 | 17 | | simple act of giving out donations with a "free food" sign in her |
---|
18 | 18 | | parents' front yard ultimately led to the creation of Mobile |
---|
19 | 19 | | Blessings from the Heart; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Today, under the direction of Ms. Duran, Mobile |
---|
21 | 21 | | Blessings from the Heart is a faith-based mobile pantry that |
---|
22 | 22 | | distributes food to those in need; through its partnerships with |
---|
23 | 23 | | the Central Texas Food Bank, Black Women in Business, and local |
---|
24 | 24 | | grocery stores, the East Austin nonprofit and its volunteers serve |
---|
25 | 25 | | approximately 500 families every weekend, with some people arriving |
---|
26 | 26 | | by bus from surrounding cities; moreover, the organization serves |
---|
27 | 27 | | senior citizens and students, and it hosts mobile pop-up pantries |
---|
28 | 28 | | in low-income neighborhoods and unhoused communities across |
---|
29 | 29 | | Austin; tables of food arranged for the public feature such items as |
---|
30 | 30 | | meat, bread, produce, and flower bouquets; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Jeannette Duran is making a meaningful difference in |
---|
32 | 32 | | the fight against hunger in Austin communities and beyond, and it is |
---|
33 | 33 | | indeed a pleasure to join in honoring her for her contributions; |

34 | 34 | | now, therefore, be it |

35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby commend Jeannette Valdez Duran for her exemplary |
