| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Rudy Bernal is retiring as head coach of the boys' |

| 9 | 9 | | basketball team at Antonian College Preparatory High School in |

| 10 | 10 | | San Antonio at the end of the 2024-2025 school year, drawing to a |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | close a legendary career in the coaching ranks that has spanned more |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | than four decades; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, A San Antonio native and a 1979 graduate of |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | The University of Texas at San Antonio, Coach Bernal began his |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | career with a two-year stint at Antonian, and he also served as an |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | assistant basketball coach at West Campus High School in the South |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | San Antonio Independent School District; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Coach Bernal took the helm of the boys' basketball |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | program at San Antonio Lanier High School in 1983, four decades |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | after his father, Ramiro, played on the school's 1943 state |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | championship team; he established a winning culture during his 31 |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | years as head coach of the Voks, guiding his teams to 4 district |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | titles and 15 playoff appearances; his tenure was highlighted by |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | back-to-back trips to the University Interscholastic League state |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | tournament in 2000 and 2001, with Lanier reaching the title contest |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | during its 2001 visit to the Frank Erwin Center in Austin; the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | team's final four appearances were a source of great pride for all |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | those associated with Lanier High School, an inner-city campus that |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | served a student body that was almost completely Hispanic, and the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | achievement remains a treasured memory in the local community; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, In 2014, Coach Bernal retired from public education, |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | but he returned to Antonian as an assistant coach before the start |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | of the 2014-2015 basketball season; he was named interim coach for |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | the Apaches in December 2015, and he was promoted to the head |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | coaching position the following year; continuing to enjoy a |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | remarkable level of success, he led Antonian to Texas Association |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | of Private and Parochial Schools state championships in 2019 and |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | 2021; in his final season, he guided the team to the regional |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | semifinals of the 2025 playoffs and an impressive record of 34-7; |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | known for his competitive spirit and a coaching style that produced |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | tenacious and suffocating defenses, he racked up 868 total |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | victories during his time at Lanier and Antonian; and |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Coach Bernal enjoys the love |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | and support of his wife, Karen, and his two daughters, Alexa and |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | Katie; retirement will afford him the opportunity to travel and |
|---|
| 46 | 46 | | spend more time with his family; and |
|---|
| 47 | 47 | | WHEREAS, Coach Bernal has served as an inspiring mentor and |
|---|
| 48 | 48 | | role model to countless student-athletes, and he may indeed reflect |
|---|
| 49 | 49 | | with pride on his myriad accomplishments as he embarks on the next |
|---|
| 50 | 50 | | exciting chapter of his life; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 51 | 51 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
|---|
| 52 | 52 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Rudy Bernal on his retirement as |
|---|
| 53 | 53 | | head coach of the Antonian College Preparatory High School boys' |
|---|
| 54 | 54 | | basketball team and extend to him sincere best wishes for the |
|---|
| 55 | 55 | | future; and, be it further |
