8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Fayette County are gathering in |
---|
9 | 9 | | Austin on April 24, 2025, in celebration of Fayette County Day at |
---|
10 | 10 | | the State Capitol; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Situated in the Blackland Prairies region of South |
---|
12 | 12 | | Central Texas, the area that would become Fayette County was first |
---|
13 | 13 | | inhabited by prehistoric peoples, such as the Clovis, and later on |
---|
14 | 14 | | by Lipan Apache and Tonkawa Indians; the region was part of Stephen |
---|
15 | 15 | | F. Austin's first colony, with formal settlement beginning in 1822, |
---|
16 | 16 | | and from 1824 to 1828, ten members of the Old Three Hundred received |
---|
17 | 17 | | title to their land grants; many area residents figured prominently |
---|
18 | 18 | | in the Texas Revolution, with more than 50 men participating in the |
---|
19 | 19 | | battle of San Jacinto, among them Joel Walter Robison, one of the |
---|
20 | 20 | | captors of General Antonio López de Santa Anna; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, On December 14, 1837, the Congress of the Republic |
---|
22 | 22 | | of Texas established Fayette County and named it for the Marquis de |
---|
23 | 23 | | Lafayette, a key supporter of American independence, and La Grange |
---|
24 | 24 | | was designated the county seat; in its early years, the county's |
---|
25 | 25 | | economy was driven by farms and plantations, with corn, tobacco, |
---|
26 | 26 | | wool, and cotton being important crops; though the Civil War and its |
---|
27 | 27 | | aftermath brought hardships for many, the economy began to recover |
---|
28 | 28 | | in the late 1860s, and the ensuing decades saw prolonged periods of |
---|
29 | 29 | | growth and prosperity, fueled in large part by an influx of German |
---|
30 | 30 | | and other European immigrants; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Today, Fayette County is home to more than 25,000 |
---|
32 | 32 | | people, and its economy benefits from the manufacturing, retail, |
---|
33 | 33 | | and health care industries; notable communities include La Grange, |
---|
34 | 34 | | Fayetteville, Schulenburg, Round Top, Flatonia, Ammannsville, |
---|
35 | 35 | | Muldoon, Carmine, and Praha; residents and visitors alike enjoy |
---|
36 | 36 | | recreational opportunities afforded by Lake Fayette and the |
---|
37 | 37 | | Colorado River, and outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the region for |
---|
38 | 38 | | activities like fishing, kayaking, and mountain biking; the county |
---|
39 | 39 | | also boasts such attractions as antique fairs, festivals, and a |
---|
40 | 40 | | number of museums and historical sites, including many of the |
---|
41 | 41 | | state's famed painted churches; and |
---|
42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, The people of Fayette County take great pride in |
---|
43 | 43 | | their rich history as they work together to build an even brighter |
---|
44 | 44 | | future, and it is indeed fitting to honor them for their unique |
---|
45 | 45 | | contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
47 | 47 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 24, 2025, as Fayette County Day |
---|
48 | 48 | | at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
---|
49 | 49 | | delegation. |
