8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The City of Jamaica Beach is celebrating the 50th |
---|
9 | 9 | | anniversary of its founding on May 24, 2025; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1975, Jamaica Beach was initially |
---|
11 | 11 | | developed two decades earlier by a Houston company, the Jamaica |
---|
12 | 12 | | Corporation, which planned a subdivision with resort-style |
---|
13 | 13 | | amenities; more than 1,000 lots were sold, and by 1965 the |
---|
14 | 14 | | development within the City of Galveston's extraterritorial |
---|
15 | 15 | | jurisdiction encompassed more than 300 homes; recreational |
---|
16 | 16 | | facilities included a two-story marina with a restaurant, a beach |
---|
17 | 17 | | bathhouse building with a sundeck, a swimming lagoon, riding |
---|
18 | 18 | | stables, a baseball diamond, and the Karankawa Indian Museum; like |
---|
19 | 19 | | many other such postwar developments, however, the project |
---|
20 | 20 | | foundered during an economic downturn, and it went into bankruptcy; |
---|
21 | 21 | | and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Despite the development's financial and legal |
---|
23 | 23 | | issues, homeowners did not give up on their community; they worked |
---|
24 | 24 | | together to solve problems created by the bankruptcy and persevered |
---|
25 | 25 | | in the face of fires, floods, and hurricanes; seeking independence |
---|
26 | 26 | | and stability, they decided to incorporate, and volunteers gathered |
---|
27 | 27 | | the necessary signatures on a petition; the Galveston Chamber of |
---|
28 | 28 | | Commerce supported annexation, however, and an ordinance of |
---|
29 | 29 | | annexation was adopted; Jamaica Beach residents subsequently |
---|
30 | 30 | | embarked on a long court battle, and in May 1975, 71 of 74 |
---|
31 | 31 | | registered Jamaica Beach voters elected to incorporate; nearly a |
---|
32 | 32 | | year later, the court issued a summary judgment declaring the |
---|
33 | 33 | | incorporation valid; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of five decades, proud and tenacious |
---|
35 | 35 | | residents of Jamaica Beach have set an inspiring example through |
---|
36 | 36 | | their deep commitment to their community, and it is indeed a |
---|
37 | 37 | | pleasure to join in marking this significant milestone in the |
---|
38 | 38 | | history of their city; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of the City of |
---|
41 | 41 | | Jamaica Beach and extend to all those participating in the |
---|
42 | 42 | | celebration sincere best wishes for a memorable and enjoyable |
---|
43 | 43 | | event. |
