8 | 8 | relating to a study on the feasibility of this state conducting a | |
9 | 9 | census of the residents of this state. | |
10 | 10 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
11 | 11 | SECTION 1. STUDY ON FEASIBILITY OF STATE CENSUS. (a) The | |
12 | 12 | state demographer under Chapter 468, Government Code, shall conduct | |
13 | 13 | a study to assess the feasibility of this state conducting a census | |
14 | 14 | to more accurately determine the population of the residents of | |
15 | 15 | this state. The study must: | |
16 | 16 | (1) consider the costs, benefits, and challenges of | |
17 | 17 | this state conducting a census; and | |
18 | 18 | (2) identify policy areas where access to more | |
19 | 19 | detailed demographic information may reduce state spending, | |
20 | 20 | including spending through appropriations. | |
21 | 21 | (b) In conducting the study under this section, the state | |
22 | 22 | demographer shall assume that the state census being studied will | |
23 | 23 | include a census question asking each resident of this state | |
24 | 24 | whether the resident is a United States citizen. | |
25 | 25 | SECTION 2. REPORT. Not later than July 1, 2026, the state | |
26 | 26 | demographer shall prepare and submit to the legislature a report on | |
27 | 27 | the results of the study conducted under Section 1 of this Act. | |
28 | 28 | SECTION 3. EXPIRATION. This Act expires September 1, 2026. | |
29 | 29 | SECTION 4. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act takes effect September | |
30 | 30 | 1, 2025. |
