66 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
77 AN ACT
88 relating to a study on the feasibility of this state conducting a
99 census of the residents of this state.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. STUDY ON FEASIBILITY OF STATE CENSUS. (a) The
1212 state demographer under Chapter 468, Government Code, shall conduct
1313 a study to assess the feasibility of this state conducting a census
1414 to more accurately determine the population of the residents of
1515 this state. The study must:
1616 (1) consider the costs, benefits, and challenges of
1717 this state conducting a census; and
1818 (2) identify policy areas where access to more
1919 detailed demographic information may reduce state spending,
2020 including spending through appropriations.
2121 (b) In conducting the study under this section, the state
2222 demographer shall assume that the state census being studied will
2323 include a census question asking each resident of this state
2424 whether the resident is a United States citizen.
2525 SECTION 2. REPORT. Not later than July 1, 2026, the state
2626 demographer shall prepare and submit to the legislature a report on
2727 the results of the study conducted under Section 1 of this Act.
2828 SECTION 3. EXPIRATION. This Act expires September 1, 2026.
2929 SECTION 4. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act takes effect September
3030 1, 2025.
