11 | 11 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
12 | 12 | SECTION 1. Section 9.004(a), Local Government Code, is | |
13 | 13 | amended to read as follows: | |
14 | 14 | (a) Except as provided by Section 9.0045, the governing body | |
15 | 15 | of a municipality on its own motion may submit a proposed charter | |
16 | 16 | amendment to the municipality's qualified voters for their approval | |
17 | 17 | at an election. The governing body shall submit a proposed charter | |
18 | 18 | amendment to the voters for their approval at an election if the | |
19 | 19 | submission is supported by a petition signed by a number of | |
20 | 20 | qualified voters of the municipality equal to at least five percent | |
21 | 21 | of the number of qualified voters of the municipality [or 20,000, | |
22 | 22 | whichever number is the smaller]. | |
23 | 23 | SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only | |
24 | 24 | to a petition proposing a charter amendment that is submitted to a | |
25 | 25 | municipality on or after the effective date of this Act. | |
26 | 26 | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025. |
