| 11 | 11 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
| 12 | 12 | SECTION 1. Section 39.023, Education Code, is amended by | |
| 13 | 13 | adding Subsection (a-17) to read as follows: | |
| 14 | 14 | (a-17) The agency shall ensure that one of the assessment | |
| 15 | 15 | instruments adopted or developed under Subsection (a) and | |
| 16 | 16 | administered to students in grade five also assesses essential | |
| 17 | 17 | knowledge and skills in social studies. | |
| 18 | 18 | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2026-2027 | |
| 19 | 19 | school year. | |
| 20 | 20 | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | |
| 21 | 21 | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | |
| 22 | 22 | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | |
| 23 | 23 | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | |
| 24 | 24 | Act takes effect September 1, 2025. |
