9 | 9 | relating to the inclusion of instruction and information about | |
10 | 10 | mental health in the required curriculum for public high school | |
11 | 11 | students. | |
12 | 12 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
13 | 13 | SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by | |
14 | 14 | adding Subsection (c-6) to read as follows: | |
15 | 15 | (c-6) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules | |
16 | 16 | requiring students to complete at least one course while in high | |
17 | 17 | school that satisfies the requirements of Subsection | |
18 | 18 | (a)(2)(B)(ii), which may include a health, physical education, or | |
19 | 19 | career and technology education course. The course must include: | |
20 | 20 | (1) instruction regarding: | |
21 | 21 | (A) depression; | |
22 | 22 | (B) anxiety; | |
23 | 23 | (C) eating disorders; | |
24 | 24 | (D) schizophrenia; and | |
25 | 25 | (E) other mental health disorders; and | |
26 | 26 | (2) information about cultivating coping skills and | |
27 | 27 | seeking available mental health services. | |
28 | 28 | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2025-2026 | |
29 | 29 | school year. | |
30 | 30 | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | |
31 | 31 | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | |
32 | 32 | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | |
33 | 33 | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | |
34 | 34 | Act takes effect September 1, 2025. |
