77 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
88 AN ACT
99 relating to the inclusion of instruction and information about
1010 mental health in the required curriculum for public high school
1111 students.
1212 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1313 SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by
1414 adding Subsection (c-6) to read as follows:
1515 (c-6) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules
1616 requiring students to complete at least one course while in high
1717 school that satisfies the requirements of Subsection
1818 (a)(2)(B)(ii), which may include a health, physical education, or
1919 career and technology education course. The course must include:
2020 (1) instruction regarding:
2121 (A) depression;
2222 (B) anxiety;
2323 (C) eating disorders;
2424 (D) schizophrenia; and
2525 (E) other mental health disorders; and
2626 (2) information about cultivating coping skills and
2727 seeking available mental health services.
2828 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2025-2026
2929 school year.
3030 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3131 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3232 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3333 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3434 Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
