117 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
128 AN ACT
139 relating to a preceptorship program in a pediatric subspecialty for
1410 medical students in this state.
1511 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1612 SECTION 1. Chapter 58, Education Code, is amended by adding
1713 Section 58.011 to read as follows:
1814 Sec. 58.011. STATEWIDE PEDIATRIC SUBSPECIALTY
1915 PRECEPTORSHIP PROGRAM. (a) In this section:
2016 (1) "Medical school" has the meaning assigned by
2117 Section 61.501(1), except that the term also includes the school of
2218 osteopathic medicine at the University of the Incarnate Word.
2319 (2) "Pediatric subspecialty" means a pediatric
2420 medical subspecialty certification offered by a member board of the
2521 American Board of Medical Specialties or American Osteopathic
2622 Association.
2723 (b) The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board may
2824 contract with one or more organizations to operate a statewide
2925 pediatric subspecialty preceptorship program for medical students
3026 enrolled in Texas medical schools.
3127 (c) An organization eligible to receive funds under this
3228 section must:
3329 (1) qualify for exemption from federal income tax
3430 under Section 501, Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (26 U.S.C. Section
3531 501); or
3632 (2) be operated by a state accredited medical school.
3733 (d) Students eligible to participate in the preceptorship
3834 program under this section must indicate an interest in a career in
3935 a pediatric subspecialty.
4036 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2025-2026
4137 academic year.
4238 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
4339 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
4440 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
4541 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
4642 Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
