| 9 | 9 | | relating to benefits provided to eligible survivors of certain |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | public safety employees. |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 12 | 12 | | SECTION 1. Section 615.021(a), Government Code, is amended |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | to read as follows: |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | (a) A survivor of an individual listed under Section 615.003 |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | is eligible for the payment of assistance under this chapter if: |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | (1) the listed individual: |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | (A) died as a result of a personal injury |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | sustained in the line of duty in the individual's position as |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | described by Section 615.003; or |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (B) died as a result of an acute myocardial |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | infarction or stroke during or not later than 24 hours after the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | performance of actions in the line of duty in the individual's |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | position as described by Section 615.003; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | (2) the survivor is: |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (A) the surviving spouse of the listed |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | individual; |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | (B) a surviving child of the listed individual, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | if there is no surviving spouse; or |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | (C) a surviving parent of the listed individual, |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | if there is no surviving spouse or child. |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | SECTION 2. The changes in law made by this Act to Section |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | 615.021, Government Code, apply only in relation to a death that |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | occurs on or after the effective date of this Act. Matters |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | regarding eligibility under Chapter 615, Government Code, in |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | relation to a death that occurs before the effective date of this |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Act, are governed by the law in effect on the date the death |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | occurred, and the former law is continued in effect for that |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | purpose. |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025. |
